Their identities and condition were not made public late Thursday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">Portland Mayor Keith Wilson condemned the shooting in an angry press conference attended by Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek, a Democrat, and other local officials. He asked ICE \u201cto halt all operations\u201d in the city. Portland has weathered months of protests outside the ICE facility and drawn national attention from President Donald Trump\u2019s attempts to deploy the military.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">U.S. Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin issued a statement alleging both the driver and the passenger were members of the \u201cvicious Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua\u201d and that the passenger had been involved in a prostitution ring and a recent shooting in Portland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">\u201cWhen agents identified themselves to the vehicle occupants, the driver weaponized his vehicle and attempted to run over the law enforcement agents,\u201d McLaughlin said. \u201cFearing for his life and safety, an agent fired a defensive shot. The driver drove off with the passenger, fleeing the scene. Portland Police received the call around 2:18 p.m. about a report of a shooting and responded to the 10200 block of Southeast Main Street, near the Adventist Health campus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">Six minutes later, officers were called to a different location: Northeast 146th Avenue and East Burnside. That\u2019s where they found the wounded man and woman from the officer-involved shooting. Officers provided medical aid and called paramedics.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">Late Thursday, Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield, a Democrat, announced his own investigation into the incident, focused on \u201cwhether any federal officer acted outside the scope of their lawful authority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">The shooting in Portland came as people across the city were already staging protests over the Wednesday killing in Minneapolis, but the focus quickly shifted to Portland\u2019s own incident as the evening wore on. Police pushed the crowd onto the sidewalks and out of the street to let a vehicle enter the ICE facility, angering protesters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">About an hour later, Portland police announced over a loudspeaker that they observed criminal activity and would be making targeted arrests. That time has long passed. We are calling on ICE to halt all operations in Portland until a full investigation can take place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">Speaking alongside Wilson, Gov. Tina Kotek and a broad array of elected, faith and community leaders urged Oregonians to react to the shooting peacefully \u2014 and for federal immigration authorities to leave Portland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">\u201cWe are all shaken and outraged by another terrible, unnecessary, violent event instigated by the reckless agenda of the Trump administration,\u201d Kotek said, nodding to the Wednesday shooting in Minnesota. \u201cThis time in our own state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">State Senator Christine Drazan, a Republican from Canby running to unseat Kotek, issued a statement hours after the press conference that appeared to be a direct response to it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">\u201cI am disappointed, but not surprised, to see our state\u2019s politicians rush to judgment and treat dangerous criminals like victims,\u201d Drazan said, adding that she wanted gang members off the street and that an investigation would determine whether the shooting was warranted. \u201cThe last thing we need in a moment like this is a bunch of grandstanding politicians exploiting this situation and inciting fear to advance their own political agendas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">Portland Police Chief Bob Day urged caution in what he called \u201cthe early stages\u201d of the incident.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/QDBIFJYXPJG2RPFUI3XRQDVRTI.jpg\" alt=\"Portland Police Chief Bob Day speaks at a press conference held at the Central Precinct in Portland, Jan. 8, 2026, in response to the shooting of two people by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent in East Portland earlier in the day.\" class=\"width_full\" style=\"aspect-ratio:2903 \/ 1608;width:100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Portland Police Chief Bob Day speaks at a press conference held at the Central Precinct in Portland, Jan. 8, 2026, in response to the shooting of two people by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent in East Portland earlier in the day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__image-by color_dgray f_s_xxs m-none\">Stephani Gordon \/ OPB<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">\u201cWe understand the heightened emotion and tension many are feeling in the wake of the shooting in Minneapolis,\u201d Day said, \u201cbut I am asking the community to remain calm as we work to learn more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">One of the wounded was taken to Legacy Emanuel and one was taken to Oregon Health &amp; Science University, according to a spokesperson for the Oregon Nurses Association, who said the union learned the information from one of its members. OHSU declined to comment. Legacy Emanuel did not immediately respond to OPB\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">The incident sent ripples of concern across Portland even before any details were known.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">Portland City Council was in session Thursday afternoon when councilors were first alerted to a possible shooting. City Council President Elana Pirtle-Guiney interrupted the meeting: \u201cCouncilors, we actually need to recess immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">Council reconvened roughly an hour after it recessed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">\u201cI\u2019m sorry to be delivering this news today,\u201d Pirtle-Guiney said, citing the shooting as well as the deadly incident in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">The three City Councilors who represent District 1 issued a joint statement in response to the shooting. Councilors Candace Avalos, Jamie Dunphy and Loretta Smith said the shooting involved \u201ctwo of our East Portland neighbors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">They said they were awaiting more information but said the incident \u201cis part of a pattern of violence that we have seen too many times across our country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body__text article-body--padding color_dgray m-none\">Hours after Thursday\u2019s shooting, light rail trains were still running past the yellow caution tape strung across the scene.
