Come See Me in the Good Light also won Outstanding Original Music Score, recognizing the work of composer Blake Neely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tComedian Tig Notaro, who produced Come See Me in the Good Light along with Ryan White, Jessica Hargrave, and Stef Willen, accepted the Cinema Eye trophy on behalf of the team. Yeah, a poet with cancer, let us get back to you,\u2019\u201d Notaro recalled. \u201cAnd it was just really like, \u2018Listen, if you just look into Andrea and Meg just even a little bit, you\u2019re either going to be in or out.\u2019 And three days later, they called me and they were like, \u2018Oh man, we are buying our plane tickets, and we are going out there [to Colorado] next week.\u2019 And I remember Ryan saying, \u2018We can\u2019t pitch this to any streamers. We have to raise money independently and make the most beautiful film that we can possibly make.\u2019 And we did that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tEventually, the film in fact was embraced by a streamer \u2013 Apple TV. Last month, it earned a spot on the coveted shortlist of feature documentaries that remain in the running for Oscar recognition (nomination voting begins on Monday).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe Cinema Eye Honors, now in its 19th year, celebrates the documentary art form in multiple categories. The award for Outstanding Production resulted in a tie between HBO\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/the-alabama-solution\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-alabama-solution\" data-tag=\"the-alabama-solution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Alabama Solution<\/a> and the Netflix feature Apocalypse in the Tropics. The latter film, directed by Petra Costa and produced by Costa and Alessandra Orofino, examines the rise of Christian nationalism in Brazil, a movement that played a key role getting right-wing populist Jair Bolsonaro elected president in 2018. After Bolsonaro lost his bid for reelection in 2022, he allegedly attempted a stage a coup \u2013 an effort to subvert democracy that earned him a lengthy prison term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAccepting the award, Costa alluded to those developments in her home country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cWe had our Trump of the tropics, and we filmed him being defeated,\u201d Costa shared. \u201cWe filmed him intimately in many moments and it was wonderful to see him lose. And it was wonderful to see him after that \u2014 well, not wonderful to see him\u2026 trying to kill the current president and in an assault similar to yours [of January 6]. But then he was condemned to 27 years in prison where he is now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-deadline-2019\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.jpg\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/The-Alabama-Solution.png\" alt=\"'The Alabama Solution'\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"576\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\u2018The Alabama Solution\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHBO Documentary Films<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tDirector-producers <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/09\/the-alabama-solution-trailer-1236555618\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andrew Jarecki and Charlotte Kaufman<\/a> accepted the Outstanding Production award for The Alabama Solution, an investigative film that exposes brutal conditions in Alabama\u2019s state prisons. Jarecki related how he and Kaufman gained rare access to the grounds of a prison through the good offices of a preacher who holds annual barbecues\/revival meetings at some of the state\u2019s correctional institutions. He suggested the filmmakers come ostensibly as volunteers helping put on a barbecue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cI pressed [the pastor] and I said, \u2018So, if I go back to New York and I get Charlotte Kaufman and we come back down here and you take us into the prison, what will we see?\u2019\u201d Jarecki recalled. \u201cAnd he sort of thought for a second and then very cautiously said, \u2018If you come back, I\u2019ll take you on the death row at Holman Prison and you\u2019ll see it\u2019s a slave ship.\u2019 And it was such a powerful moment. That Oscar-shortlisted film also won Outstanding Editing, recognizing the work of Viridiana Lieberman. Seeds, the Oscar-shortlisted feature documentary directed by <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/brittany-shyne\/\" id=\"auto-tag_brittany-shyne\" data-tag=\"brittany-shyne\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brittany Shyne<\/a>, won two awards \u2013 for Outstanding Debut and Outstanding Cinematography.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAlso claiming multiple awards was <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/06\/social-studies-director-lauren-greenfield-interview-1236436029\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social Studies<\/a>, the FX series directed by Lauren Greenfield \u2014 winner for Outstanding Nonfiction Series and Broadcast Editing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tOutstanding Nonfiction Short went to Joshua Seftel\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/11\/all-the-empty-rooms-trailer-1236617282\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">All the Empty Rooms<\/a>, a Netflix film (it\u2019s shortlisted for the Oscars as well).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tOther films on the Oscar Feature Shortlist receiving honors include <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/01\/doc-talk-podcast-oscar-shortlisted-films-1236665762\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Co-Existence My Ass!<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/12\/cover-up-documentary-exclusive-clip-seymour-hersh-1236644898\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cover-Up<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/01\/mr-nobody-against-putin-kino-lorber-acquisition-1236675943\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mr. Nobody Against Putin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cAcclaimed Danish editor Janus Billeskov Jansen was presented with the inaugural Cinema Eye\/Con Award for Career Achievement,\u201d the event noted, \u201cand four films were added to Cinema Eye\u2019s Legacy Film Canon: Burden of Dreams, Portrait of Jason, Sans Soleil and Tongues Untied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe 19th Annual Honors were once again held at the New York Academy of Medicine in East Harlem and were live streamed on Cinema Eye\u2019s YouTube channel. The night\u2019s presenters (Cinema Eye refers to them as \u201cguides\u201d) included six previous Cinema Eye winners: Mila Aung-Thwin (Last Train Home); Diane Becker (Navalny); Sigrid Dyekj\u00e6r (The Cave); Contessa Gayles (Songs from the Hole); Su Kim (Hale County This Morning This Evening), and Caroline Waterlow (OJ: Made in America).
