{"id":504345,"date":"2026-01-09T18:46:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-09T18:46:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/504345\/"},"modified":"2026-01-09T18:46:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T18:46:10","slug":"the-fight-of-our-lives-australian-gun-lobbys-campaign-against-tighter-laws-after-bondi-massacre-revealed-gun-control","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/504345\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018The fight of our lives\u2019: Australian gun lobby\u2019s campaign against tighter laws after Bondi massacre revealed | Gun control"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In a video posted online five days after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/bondi-beach-shooting-sydney-australia\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bondi beach massacre<\/a>, the president of Shooters Union Australia, Graham Park, sounded the alarm to gun owners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis is the most urgent situation, desperate situation we\u2019ve seen in decades,\u201d Park says in a video hook-up with Tom Kenyon, a former state Labor minister-turned chief executive of the Sporting Shooters\u2019 Association of Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe\u2019re in the fight of our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The fight Park was referencing was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/dec\/16\/anthony-albanese-ready-for-the-fight-to-tighten-firearms-laws-as-national-party-and-gun-groups-push-back-ntwnfb\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anthony Albanese-led push<\/a> to tighten Australia\u2019s world-leading gun safety laws after the mass shooting on 14 December, an antisemitic terror attack in which 15 people were slain with guns that were lawfully obtained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The prime minister secured a deal at national cabinet to renegotiate the national firearms agreement struck after the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, with premiers and chief ministers committing to strengthen gun controls in their jurisdictions while helping to fast-track work on a national gun register.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Albanese also promised a national gun buyback scheme, noting there were more guns in Australia now than at the time of Port Arthur.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe terrible events at Bondi show that we do need more guns off our streets,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The New South Wales premier, Chris Minns, moved almost immediately, recalling state parliament before Christmas to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/dec\/23\/nsw-passes-controversial-new-gun-and-protest-laws-in-wake-of-bondi-attacks-after-marathon-debate-ntwnfb\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">restrict the numbers of firearms a shooter could own<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe first battle got lost in the NSW legislature,\u201d Park said after the laws sailed through parliament after the Liberals split from the Nationals to support them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cBut that\u2019s just the first day of the war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The federal government wants other states and territories to commit to their own changes by March and legislate them no later than 1 July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">After last year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/aug\/25\/australias-gun-lobby-says-its-winning-the-fight-against-firearm-control-as-numbers-surge\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">boasting it was \u201cwinning\u201d<\/a> the fight against gun controls, the gun lobby \u2013 with support from the Nationals and One Nation \u2013 is now preparing to resist what it claims is an unjustified attack on law-abiding owners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The groups have launched an advertising campaign, started online petitions, commissioned opinion polling and even begun discussing a legal challenge to the NSW laws as they urge supporters to make gun control a vote-swinging issue at elections this year in South Australia and Victoria, and in NSW in 2027.<\/p>\n<p>The prime minister, Anthony Albanese, centre, and the NSW premier, Chris Minns, left, and the NSW police commissioner, Mal Lanyon.  Photograph: Mick Tsikas\/AAP<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cMake this an issue,\u201d Park told supporters in a 22 December video. \u201cIf they go with this [supporting tougher gun laws], make them pay. If they go against it, support them like crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Stephen Bendle, convenor of the Australian Gun Safety Alliance, urged governments to stand firm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe think Bondi has caused a recalibration of the community\u2019s expectations,\u201d he said. \u201cAustralians have been very proud of our gun laws \u2013 and they have kept us very safe from these sort of events. But the public has been unaware of the growth in gun numbers and the types of guns available.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cNinety-five per cent of the population don\u2019t have guns and the gun laws can\u2019t be written for 4% or 5% of the population.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Keep Australia Safe\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The foundations for a coordinated national campaign were built in 2025 after several shooting groups met to discuss forming an alliance to speak with a \u201cunited voice\u201d for firearms owners and businesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In a 6 January update to supporters, Park said the groups involved in the fledging coalition \u2013 the Australian Firearms Advisory Council \u2013 were \u201cworking closely\u201d after the Bondi shooting.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"dcr-zzndwp\"><p>The campaign has spent more than $42,000 promoting messages on Meta platforms since Bondi<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The council is running a campaign titled \u201cKeep Australia Safe\u201d, the branding and messaging for which reveals how it it intends to prosecute its argument.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The material emphasises the need to combat terrorism, not \u201clegal firearms ownership\u201d, in response to what authorities believe was an Islamic State-inspired attack on the beachside Hanukah celebration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The campaign has spent more than $42,000 promoting messages on Meta platforms since Bondi, making it the 11th-biggest spender on political content in Australia in the past month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Park said in the 6 January video he was optimistic about the prospects of success, doubting other states would follow NSW.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Western Australian tightened its gun laws in 2024 to include firearm limits after a series of shootings linked to either domestic violence or organised crime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The response to Albanese\u2019s push among other states and territories has been mixed despite the national cabinet agreement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Victorian government has ordered a review of its gun laws while the Northern Territory has signalled resistance, declaring it will not \u201cblindly follow\u201d other states. In Queensland, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/politics\/queensland\/queensland-signs-on-to-gun-limits-but-antisemitism-is-bigger-issue-says-bleijie-20251217-p5noet.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Crisafulli government<\/a> has indicated its priority is antisemitism \u2013 not gun control.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We\u2019re not crazy shooters\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In a video posted on 31 December, Kenyon offers guidance to gun owners on how to frame their arguments to politicians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He encourages them to state that Bondi wasn\u2019t a failure of gun laws but rather of background checks and a lack of police resources.<\/p>\n<p>The Liberal leader, Sussan Ley, and the Nationals leader, David Littleproud, who said \u2018we don\u2019t have a gun problem in this country \u2026 we have an extreme Islamic ideology problem\u2019. Photograph: Mick Tsikas\/AAP<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He encourages them to remind MPs that, with an election on the horizon, they will vote \u201caccording to firearms policy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He also offers firm advice on what not to do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cDon\u2019t make threats,\u201d he said. \u201cWe cannot give the impression that we are these crazy shooters, right? Because we\u2019re not. We\u2019re not crazy shooters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Nationals leader, David Littleproud, and his colleagues have echoed the gun groups\u2019 talking points, while the Liberal leader, Sussan Ley, and former prime minister John Howard dismissed the government\u2019s crackdown as a distraction from the task of confronting antisemitism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe don\u2019t have a gun problem in this country,\u201d Littleproud told Sky News this week. \u201cWe have an extreme Islamic ideology problem in this country, one that needs to be unearthed, faced into, and not run away from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It is not only conservative politicians who have raised concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The federal Labor MP and Olympic shooter Dan Repacholi criticised the NSW government for rushing firearm limits, which meant he \u201cwould no longer be able to compete in all my Olympic events\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhen you rush things through it has unintended consequences,\u201d he wrote on Facebook. \u201cShame on the NSW Government.\u201d \ufffc<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Roland Browne, the vice-president of Gun Control Australia, says the gun lobby\u2019s messaging echoes the language used by the National Rifle Association (NRA) in the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis is taking a page out of the American NRA, where their approach to any public health-related gun control reform is to say that it\u2019s not the guns, it\u2019s the individuals and that there must be a problem with the individual,\u201c he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Kenyon dismisses comparisons with the NRA, insisting Australia\u2019s deadliest shooting since Port Arthur was a failure in the application of the gun laws \u2013 not the laws themselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe\u2019re not taking cues from the NRA on this and we\u2019re not talking to them about it,\u201d says Kenyon, who was a Labor minister in South Australia before defecting to Family First.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cBut I\u2019ve been involved in politics for a very long time.
