{"id":504472,"date":"2026-01-09T20:02:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-09T20:02:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/504472\/"},"modified":"2026-01-09T20:02:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T20:02:09","slug":"getting-a-terrible-tattoo-when-youre-young-feels-like-a-life-lesson-yet-so-many-people-still-crave-more-tattoos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/504472\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting a terrible tattoo when you\u2019re young feels like a life lesson \u2013 yet so many people still crave more | Tattoos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">My first tattoo was a 21st birthday present to myself, and I couldn\u2019t tell you what it was.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">I was backpacking up the east coast of Australia and heard about a Sydney artist who would take a tab of acid, chat to you for a bit, then draw something he thought captured your aura.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It was the 90s, and I hadn\u2019t yet decided if I was a grungehead or a New Age type, so a tattoo of a vaguely mystical symbol that looked a bit like a spiral and a bit like a star seemed spot on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Back then, it was still a bit edgy to get inked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Only about one in 10 Australians \u2013 11.9% of men and 8.5% of women \u2013 had a tattoo. According to research <a href=\"https:\/\/mccrindle.com.au\/article\/topic\/generation-y\/tattoos-aussies-embrace-body-art-as-a-cultural-norm\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by McCrindle<\/a>, by 2023 30% of Australians were inked, and women have overtaken men \u2013 33% of women have at least one, compared with 26% of men.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Once someone gets their first piece, they tend to keep adding to their collection. More than a third of those with tattoos have five or more. About one in four (26%) stop at just one, while 19% have two, 12% have three, and 9% have four.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOnce you break that first barrier, it\u2019s much less scary,\u201d Paige Klimentou says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Klimentou is an expert in hardcore music and tattooing from RMIT University who also works at the front counter of Melbourne\u2019s oldest tattoo studio, Vic Market Tattoo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">She describes herself as \u201cmoderately to heavily tattooed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cFor some people it is very much an adrenaline thing \u2026 it\u2019s a collectible thing,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThey may really agonise over that first tattoo, but once they\u2019re on their third they\u2019re like, \u2018oh, I just saw a funny bird\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">People talk about their \u201ccollecting\u201d as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/fashion\/shortcuts\/2018\/may\/01\/addicted-to-tattoos-david-beckham-body-art\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an addiction<\/a>, or a compulsion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Australian &amp; New Zealand Mental Health Association says there is no proof you can get hooked on ink in the same way you might with drugs, but you can get a <a href=\"https:\/\/anzmh.asn.au\/blog\/addiction\/getting-inked-addictive\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rush of adrenaline and endorphins<\/a> that ameliorate the impact of the pain and keep people coming back.<\/p>\n<p>From cavemen to convicts to cover-ups<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Tattoos date back thousands of years to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/fashion\/2014\/may\/03\/exhibition-tattoos-neolithic-age-today\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">markings<\/a> found on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2023\/aug\/16\/otzi-iceman-receding-hairline-dark-skin-tone-study-reveals\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00d6tzi the iceman<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/fashion\/2018\/mar\/01\/worlds-earliest-figural-tattoos-gebelein-mummies-british-museum\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gebelein Man A<\/a>\u2019s bull and sheep figures, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kristinakillgrove\/2015\/11\/23\/chilean-chinchorro-or-alpine-otzi-archaeologists-settle-debate-over-worlds-oldest-tattoos\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chinchorro mummy<\/a>\u2019s moustache.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">There are tribal tattoos, sacred tattoos, tattoos to indicate status, power and ownership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/australian.museum\/about\/history\/exhibitions\/body-art\/aboriginal-scarification\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scarification practices<\/a> of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders can be considered tattoo-adjacent \u2013 the Australian Museum says \u201ceach deliberately placed scar tells a story of pain, endurance, identity, status, beauty, courage, sorrow or grief\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Convicts sent to Australia commonly had tattoos of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2016-08-30\/convict-tattoos-tasmanias-inked-history-explored-in-book\/7798044\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anchors, letters and hearts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The stigma associated with those earlier tattoos has well and truly faded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Klimentou says tattooing has constantly evolved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIn a western setting, tattooing was associated with criminals, sailors, the lower social classes,\u201d she says. \u201cBut it\u2019s been co-opted by the middle class \u2026 We see people wanting to frame them as fine art, bestowing meaning on them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Jeff Rhodes, the president of the Professional Tattooers Association of Australia, says tattooing was a \u201csmall, frowned-upon industry\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cNow it\u2019s the trend,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI\u2019m from the old school, and for me, tattoo shops were a little bit naughty. Now they\u2019re acceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">When he started out more than four decades ago, there were five tattoo shops in his home state of Western Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cNow I\u2019ve got a shop in Penrith,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd there are five shops on the same street.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Rhodes says he used to do a lot of hearts, skulls, tigers and snakes. \u201cThen it was tribal, Celtic, American Indian stuff, but it all comes back around,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt\u2019s gone back to fine lines, traditional stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">And in some cases, tattoos have become part of a healing process.<\/p>\n<p>Aleisha specialises in inking hyper-realistic 3D areola and nipple tattoos for clients. Tattoo artist Aleisha Michael tattoos realistic 3D nipples on women who have had surgical breast reconstructions after cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt\u2019s a healing aspect, a closure to their journey [that] restores their sense of femininity, of sexuality,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">She founded the Pink Lotus Australia Foundation to subsidise the cost of nipple tattooing, while also donating temporary nipple tattoos via breast care nurses and campaigning to broaden Medicare subsidies and train nurses to do them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cA lot of the time when I\u2019ve done a nipple tattoo \u2026 they say, \u2018I didn\u2019t realise how much it meant to me\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Today, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/now\/video\/new-robot-moves-the-needle-on-ai-tattooing-246727237709\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">robot tattoo artists<\/a> that use artificial intelligence, tattoos done with disappearing ink that manufacturers claim last a year or two, software and apps for better design, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-05-30\/mind-reading-e-tattoo-help-worker-fatigue\/105347478\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">temporary face tattoos<\/a> that supposedly decode brainwaves to measure mental strain, and an increasing demand for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/fashion\/commentisfree\/2024\/mar\/11\/tattoo-removal-best-laser-removing-cost-australia\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">laser tattoo removal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Removal techniques are not perfect, but they are better than they were in the 90s. I eventually got tired of explaining the psychedelic origin of that nebulous first tattoo that was supposed to be a representation of my aura. Off I went to another Sydney artist for a cover-up, which unfortunately came out as an even more nebulous black splodge. A third cover-up means the black splodge now has some pretty trimmings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Rhodes is nostalgic for the old days and bemoans the commercialisation of the sector, where artists have been replaced by franchises and the craft of mixing inks has been replaced by buying colour ranges online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe skills of the trade are dying out,\u201d he says. \u201cIn the old shops you\u2019d walk in and it was wall-to-wall flash cards [of designs]; they don\u2019t even have that any more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThey\u2019ll send it to you on the computer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But Klimentou sees tattoos as a powerful way to assert control and signal identity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cFor women in particular,\u201d she says, \u201cwe\u2019re socialised as young girls into this idea of purity, of a clean girl aesthetic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201c[Tattoos] can be a way of rebelling against gender norms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThat\u2019s not what the patriarchy wants.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"My first tattoo was a 21st birthday present to myself, and I couldn\u2019t tell you what it was.&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":504473,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[4740,50],"class_list":{"0":"post-504472","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-news","8":"tag-australia","9":"tag-news"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@us\/115866929951229776","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/504472","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=504472"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/504472\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/504473"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=504472"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=504472"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=504472"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
