A report has been filed to Houston Police Department after a person was captured on video vandalizing Pride flags outside of Houston\u2019s Montrose Center.<\/p>\n
The incident happened on Thursday. Footage shared with KPRC 2 showed the person pulling the flags out of the fence outside the center and throwing them on the ground.<\/p>\n
In a statement to KPRC 2, the Montrose Center said the flags were a recent addition, being added in 2025 as a symbol to support the LGBTQ+ community.<\/p>\n
Avery Belyeu the CEO of the Montrose Center, said the center has not determined whether this incident was an act of anti-gay sentiment or the result of a mental crisis, but she understands that the LGBTQ+ community has often been targeted by these types of actions.<\/p>\n
\u201cLet us be clear: we are not going anywhere,\u201d Belyeu said in a statement. \u201cYou can tear down a thousand of our flags and we will still show up every day to provide affirming care and a safe space for our community to connect, gather, and show our Pride.\u201d<\/p>\n
The idea for the flags was inspired after the area\u2019s iconic rainbow crosswalk was removed following a federal mandate called the \u201cSafe Roads Initiative.\u201d<\/p>\n
