Gordon Theater located on the Rutgers University\u2013Camden Campus. Tickets are $15 for General Admission, $5 for Camden Residents Senior Citizens, Faculty\/Staff, and Alumni, and Free for Rutgers Students with a valid ID. Tickets are <a href=\"http:\/\/vmpa.camden.rutgers.edu\/theater-program\/production-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>available for purchase<\/strong><\/a> online.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/articles\/race-records-bessie-smith-big-bill-broonzy-music-business\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Race records<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0were 78 rpm phonograph records marketed to African American audiences during the 1920s and 30&#8217;s. The recordings were primarily what was known as &#8220;race music,&#8221; comprised of a variety of African American musical genres\u00a0including blues, jazz, and spiritual music, at the time considered unsuitable for the general population. Artists included Bessie Smith, Jelly Roll Morton, and Louis Armstrong.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/camden-Jan9b.jpg\" height=\"412px;\" width=\"600px&quot;\"\/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pictured: Pages from Race Record Catalog as part of Dr. John Davis&#8217; presentation, courtesy of Hamilton Library<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newjerseystage.com\/advertise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Advertise with NJ Stage for $50-$100 per month, click here for info<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>The cast of ten features guest artist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiaragreene.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 18px;\" target=\"_blank\">Tiara Green<\/a>, as Mamie, a 20s blues singer. Rutgers theater student Caden Adams plays her son, James, who discovers a trove of old 78s in his great-grandmother&#8217;s attic and is magically transported back in time to a recording session at Victor Records circa 1928. Guest artist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brian_Anthony_Wilson\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif; font-size: 18px;\" target=\"_blank\">Brian Anthony Wilson<\/a>\u00a0plays the Rev. McGee, who arrives at the session to record one of his most popular three-minute sermons. Theater student Andrew Merkle is Smithers, the recording engineer.<\/p>\n<p>The cast also includes guest artists\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/dana.orange\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dana Orange<\/a>\u00a0as Benny and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zairexzavire.com\/about\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zero X<\/a>\u00a0as slim.<\/p>\n<p>Theater student\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.backstage.com\/u\/alana-rivera\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alana Rivera-Mills\u00a0<\/a>plays Alberta and Freshman student Myra&#8217;Cal West plays Ethel. Also in the cast are theater students Addy Adebo and Kirsten Fair.<\/p>\n<p>The 12 piece on-stage, orchestra is directed by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.danielspearman.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Daniel Spearman<\/a>, trumpeter, pianist composer, and Camden native. The musicians include some of the best professional jazz musicians in the area, along with students and alumni from Rutgers\u2013Camden.<\/p>\n<p>The score consists of 18 tunes, some familiar and some obscure, written by top composers and lyricists of the 20s and 30s, and all of which were recorded for Victor&#8217;s &#8220;race catalog.&#8221; Stef\u00e1n \u00d6rn Arnarson, is handling the arrangements and orchestrations, many of which were transcribed from the original recordings.<\/p>\n<p>Choreography is by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.koreshdance.org\/social-hip-hop-with-sammy\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Samuel Antonio Reyes<\/a>, who was nominated for a Barrymore Award for his choreography on\u00a0Alter Boyz\u00a0at the 11th\u00a0Hour Theatre Company. Professor James Mobley will design the authentic-looking recording studio and attic scenery for the piece. Costume design is by Millie Hiibel, Costume Director at Opera Philadelphia and freelance costume designer; lighting is by Drew Billiau; Brandy Lee Hatcher is the stage manager.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vmpa.camden.rutgers.edu\/theater-program\/theater-faculty\/elliott\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Kenneth Elliott<\/a>\u00a0is a professor of theater chair of Rutgers\u2013Camden&#8217;s Visual, Media, and Performing Arts Department. Elliott wrote the book for the musical\u00a0Hand Me Down the Silver Trumpet\u00a0which had a workshop production in 2014. Elliot co-founded the Off-Off Broadway company Theatre-in-Limbo with Charles Busch, and directed, produced, and sometimes acted in the original productions of many of Mr. Busch&#8217;s comedies, including\u00a0Psycho Beach Party, Times Square Angel, The Lady in Question, Red Scare on Sunset, and\u00a0Vampire Lesbians of Sodom. Each of these transferred to commercial Off-Broadway runs, and\u00a0Vampire Lesbians\u00a0ran for five years at the historic Provincetown Playhouse.<\/p>\n<p>His recent book,\u00a0Beyond Ridiculous: Making Gay Theatre with Charles Busch in 1980s New York\u00a0(University of Iowa Press, 2023), chronicles his collaboration with Mr. Busch. He co-authored\u00a0Devil Boys from Beyond\u00a0(with Buddy Thomas) and directed its premiere at the 2009 New York International Fringe Festival (Fringe Award for Outstanding Play), as well as the 2010 Off-Broadway transfer to New World Stages.\u00a0Devil Boys\u00a0has since been performed at dozens of theaters across the country and internationally.<\/p>\n<p>He directed the first New York revival of Mart Crowley&#8217;s\u00a0The Boys in the Band\u00a0(WPA Theatre\/Lucille Lortel Theatre) in 1996 and staged it again the following year in London&#8217;s West End (Aldwych Theatre). Other New York credits include\u00a0The Green Heart\u00a0(Manhattan Theatre Club), Harry Kondoleon&#8217;s\u00a0Zero Positive,\u00a0and the Todd Rundgren\/Joe Orton musical\u00a0Up Against It\u00a0(Public Theater). Regional credits include The Asolo Rep, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, The Denver Center, The Wilma Theatre, Bay Street Theatre Festival, Prince Music Theatre, the Cape Playhouse, and The Cleveland Playhouse. He received his B.S. and M.A. in Theatre from Northwestern University, and his Ph.D. in Theatre from U.C.L.A. His Rutgers productions have included\u00a0Rent, Romeo and Juliet, Clybourne Park, Hedda Gabler, Tartuffe, Angels in America, Measure for Measure, Dracula, A Doll&#8217;s House, The Glass Menagerie, and\u00a0The Importance of Being Earnest.
