PHOENIX \u2014 Phoenix retailers with shopping carts have until Jan. 15 to comply with a new certification requirement being mandated by the city.<\/p>\n
Last year, the Phoenix City Council approved an ordinance that sets new rules attempting to reduce the number of\u00a0abandoned shopping carts seen across the city.<\/a> Nearly 8,000 abandoned carts were collected throughout Phoenix in 2024.<\/p>\n The new ordinance obligates large retailers to complete an annual certification form that confirms the retailer has installed locking wheel systems on their carts or another system that prevents carts from being taken away.<\/p>\n City officials said all retailers with shopping carts will need to inform the city of the number of carts they have and provide a point of contact.<\/p>\n In addition, stores will be required to pay retrieval fees for carts brought back to the property by the city. For stores without a retrieval contract, they will be charged $50 for each cart returned by the city.<\/p>\n After the Jan. 15 deadline, the city may begin taking enforcement actions for retailers not in compliance with the city’s rules.<\/p>\n Not complying with the shopping cart ordinance could result in the city imposing a $500 fee for the first violation and $750 for a second violation reported within 36 months.
