{"id":505026,"date":"2026-01-10T01:28:14","date_gmt":"2026-01-10T01:28:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/505026\/"},"modified":"2026-01-10T01:28:14","modified_gmt":"2026-01-10T01:28:14","slug":"judge-dismisses-salt-n-pepas-attempt-to-reclaim-master-recordings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/505026\/","title":{"rendered":"Judge dismisses Salt-N-Pepa&#8217;s attempt to reclaim master recordings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"P5UNLXNK75EXPDZVV32R4GIRG4\">NEW YORK \u2014 A federal judge has dismissed <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/rock-hall-fame-2025-artists-8a7cde717004e0f459a382eb2e9bdb2c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the pioneering hip-hop group Salt-N-Pepa\u2019s<\/a> lawsuit to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/saltnpepa-lawsuit-umg-7ff67b7064c2d8f9c8b61b9e94973610\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reclaim ownership<\/a> of their master recordings from Universal Music Group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PQ6IV3HATBGAXH3JP33OIF77QA\">U.S. District Judge Denise Cote on Thursday sided with the recording giant, arguing that the Grammy-winning group never owned the copyrights to their sound recordings and didn\u2019t transfer them to anyone else.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MVQA6SSRLRH3TOWMMBCMSCTM5E\">\u201cPlaintiffs can only terminate copyright transfers that they executed,\u201d the judge wrote. \u201cNone of the contracts identified by Plaintiffs indicate that they ever owned the Master Tapes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WVEQMAVDNRHGLN75KF36F2NEKI\">UMG argued that the recordings were \u201cworks made for hire,\u201d which would not allow for the reclaiming of rights. Salt-N-Pepa\u2019s lawsuit said their agreements with the label made it clear that they were not.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SSUOVAZBARD2RMHY2RXOGEJDYU\">\u201cEven with the court\u2019s complete rejection of their claims, we remain open and willing to find a resolution to the matter and turn the page so we can focus our efforts on working together to amplify Salt-N-Pepa\u2019s legacy for generations to come,\u201d UMG said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HOMJFVN6LZFUNGZRBLU3VK6NVA\">Representatives for Salt-N-Pepa said in a statement that they disagreed with the judge\u2019s decision and \u201cfully intend to pursue our rights on appeal,\u201d adding: \u201cWe remain committed to vindicating and reclaiming our rights as creators under the Copyright Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5FIHFN46JVCVBGFUW2MMCCFZFE\">The Queens, New York, duo of Cheryl \u201cSalt\u201d James and Sandra \u201cPepa\u201d Denton became Salt-N-Pepa in 1985. They were later joined by <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hiphop-50th-anniversary-women-1315186a6bf90ede0190a9d3f8682362\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DJ Spinderella<\/a>, who was not part of the early agreements under dispute and is not involved in the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PDRPYRKGJBDK7D44LYME6MACAI\">Salt-N-Pepa signed with Next Plateau Records and released their debut album \u201cHot, Cool &amp; Vicious\u201d in 1986. Next Plateau was an independent label at the time, and it\u2019s now under the banner of Universal\u2019s Republic label. Some of the group\u2019s hits include 1993\u2019s \u201cShoop\u201d and 1987\u2019s \u201cPush It.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2UHVSGDA4BHDVO5HD6YKOL352I\">In 1995 they became the first female rap group to win a Grammy, and in 2021, they received a Grammy lifetime achievement award. In November, they followed <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/missy-elliott\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Missy Elliott<\/a> as the second female hip-hop act in the Rock &amp; Roll Hall of Fame, handed the Influence Award.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ANOHPLO64NFLNBMRMB6ACYSBBU\">At the podium during the induction ceremony, James noted the group\u2019s legal fight: \u201cThis is the Influence Award.
