Many supplement companies built potent claims from emerging research, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a19519102\/is-fish-oil-the-new-snake-oil\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a19519102\/is-fish-oil-the-new-snake-oil\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"later turned out\" data-node-id=\"1.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">later turned out<\/a> to be not so true. And they conflated the study results that showed the benefits of the oil from fish\u2014as in the food\u2014with their fish oil supplements.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"body-text css-i9p093 emevuu60\">But as all things come around again, fish oil supplements are back with their promises, only this time dipping their line in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/trending-news\/a44450391\/peak-influence-essay\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/trending-news\/a44450391\/peak-influence-essay\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"social media\" data-node-id=\"2.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> feeding frenzy around supplements. So let&#8217;s revisit fish oil supplements\u2014and what the science has to say about their supposed benefits.<\/p>\n<p>What Is Fish Oil?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"5.0\">NOT TO BE <\/strong>obvious, but it&#8217;s the oil from fish. More specifically, it&#8217;s omega-3s eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) though largely docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These fatty acids make up the oily nature of fish, some in greater presence in certain varieties. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a41465252\/how-to-bake-salmon-in-oven\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a41465252\/how-to-bake-salmon-in-oven\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Salmon\" data-node-id=\"5.2\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Salmon<\/a> and mackerel are high in omega-3 fatty acids and are considered &#8220;oily&#8221; fish. Cod and tilapia are lower in omega-3s. And that&#8217;s a great thing\u2014because unlike many other supplements, research can help build a scientific consensus. With fish oil supplements, we&#8217;re not quite at consensus status, but we&#8217;re getting closer in some areas.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Here&#8217;s where the research stands now.<\/p>\n<p>Fish Oil Supplements and Heart Health<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">One of the most well-studied areas for fish oil supplementation is heart health, with many studies suggesting that fish oil supplements have cardioprotective benefits. (Cardiovascular health claims were the most common in a recent study of 255 fish oil supplements published in <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamacardiology\/article-abstract\/2808769\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamacardiology\/article-abstract\/2808769\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"JAMA Cardiology\" data-node-id=\"18.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JAMA Cardiology<\/a>.) High-dose fish oil supplements are even available by prescription to reduce high triglycerides\u2014fats that circulate in the bloodstream and increase heart disease and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a43714816\/stroke-vs-heart-attack-differences\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a43714816\/stroke-vs-heart-attack-differences\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"stroke risk\" data-node-id=\"18.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">stroke risk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Still, research continues to turn up new questions.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"20\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">In a new study published in <a href=\"https:\/\/bmjmedicine.bmj.com\/content\/3\/1\/e000451\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/bmjmedicine.bmj.com\/content\/3\/1\/e000451\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"BMJ Medicine\" data-node-id=\"20.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BMJ Medicine<\/a>, researchers found that fish oil supplements were associated with an increase in risk of stroke and atrial fibrillation in healthy people. However, in people with existing heart disease, fish oil was linked to a reduced risk of progression to bigger problems. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"21\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">A new study published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0899900724000637\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0899900724000637\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Nutrition\" data-node-id=\"21.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nutrition<\/a> showed that people who supplemented their diets with fish or fish oil supplements for a year experienced reductions in pro-inflammatory blood markers, with the biggest benefits in people who had previously eaten fish less than once a month.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Will those changes reduce your risk of diseases or help you avoid new ones?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">That\u2019s still being sorted out. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"24\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Just know that fish oil supplements should never replace your statin for high cholesterol. That might be because the fatty acids reduce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a46474286\/what-you-can-and-cant-eat-on-dr-weils-anti-inflammatory-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a46474286\/what-you-can-and-cant-eat-on-dr-weils-anti-inflammatory-diet\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"inflammation\" data-node-id=\"26.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">inflammation<\/a> that can break down cartilage, the researchers speculate. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Though here there exists conflicting research too.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"28\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7600426\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7600426\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"28.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> (from the same year) found that data on dietary intervention of omega-3 supplementation in patients with arthritis is &#8220;limited&#8221;\u2014meaning that it&#8217;s tough to draw conclusions from the existing science.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"29\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Are you seeing a pattern here?<\/p>\n<p>Fish Oil Supplements and Eye Health<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"31\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">In a study review published in <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/aos.15255\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/aos.15255\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Acta Opthalmologica\" data-node-id=\"31.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acta Opthalmologica<\/a>, people with dry eyes who took fish oil reported an improvement in symptoms, although clinical tests showed no difference.<\/p>\n<p>Fish Oil Supplements and Brain Health<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"33\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">A study review published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.cureus.com\/uploads\/review_article\/pdf\/116591\/20221108-29179-fwipu1.pdf\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/assets.cureus.com\/uploads\/review_article\/pdf\/116591\/20221108-29179-fwipu1.pdf\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Cureus\" data-node-id=\"33.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cureus<\/a> suggests that fish oil supplements can boost learning, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a29690112\/how-to-train-your-memory\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a29690112\/how-to-train-your-memory\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"memory\" data-node-id=\"33.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">memory<\/a>, cognitive performance, and brain blood flow. (Still more research is needed.)<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"34\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">And then there&#8217;s the whole idea that fish oil supplements can help treat mental health challenges.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"35\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">In a study published in <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/article-abstract\/2787320?resultClick=1\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/article-abstract\/2787320?resultClick=1\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"JAMA\" data-node-id=\"35.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JAMA<\/a>, people who took omega-3 supplements for an average of 5.3 years were slightly more likely to develop depression or depressive symptoms than those who took placebos.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"36\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">And fish oil isn\u2019t a substitute for medication for mental health, either. \u201cThe science isn&#8217;t quite there if you&#8217;re looking at things like mood improvement, like if somebody is truly diagnosed with a mental health disorder, such as major depression,\u201d says LesLee Funderburk, Ph.D., R.D., C.S.S.D., C.S.C.S., Associate Professor in Nutrition Sciences at Baylor University\u2019s Robbins College of Health and Human Sciences.<strong data-node-id=\"36.1\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Should You Take a Fish Oil Supplement?  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"39\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"39.0\">DO YOU EAT<\/strong> fatty fish twice a week or more? If not, a fish oil supplement might benefit you, says St. Pierre. Any time you eat a serving of fatty fish, you can skip the supplement that day and the next few days.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"40\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">A dose of one to two grams of EPA and DHA per day is likely safe and beneficial, without requiring you to swallow more than one to three pills a day, says St. Pierre.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"41\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Choose a product independently verified by NSF, USP, ConsumerLab, or Informed Choice for purity and quality. Then, read the label closely\u2014some products combine fish oil and other nutrients like vitamin D or vitamin K. You could accidentally overdo it when combining one of these varieties with other supps containing the same nutrients.<br data-node-id=\"41.1\"\/> <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"42\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">And of course, before starting a new supplement, chat with your doctor or pharmacist. This is especially important if you take a blood thinner because fish oil can also have anticoagulating properties, especially at high doses. And if you have a fish allergy, ask about alternatives like krill oil or algae oil.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"43\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">One more thing: Don\u2019t bother with eggs or milk with added DHA or EPA.
