{"id":505456,"date":"2026-01-10T05:45:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-10T05:45:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/505456\/"},"modified":"2026-01-10T05:45:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-10T05:45:08","slug":"we-deserve-answers-one-month-later-family-still-searching-for-justice-in-corey-denmarks-killing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/505456\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;We deserve answers&#8217;: One month later, family still searching for justice in Corey Denmark\u2019s killing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Justice means sitting in a courtroom watching you pay for what you did or watching you guys pay for what you did,&#8221; his sister Felicia Hughes said. <\/p>\n<p>JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 Nearly a month after 49-year-old Corey Denmark was shot and killed outside a shopping center in Jacksonville, his family is still waiting for answers and pleading for someone to come forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow will be 30 days,&#8221; Cynthia Hughes, his mother, said. &#8220;30 days without my boy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Police say Denmark was found shot in the parking lot of the\u00a0Paxon Shopping Center on Edgewood Avenue around 8 p.m. on Dec. 10. Another person was shot but survived. Denmark did not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went to the medical examiner\u2019s office, and they showed me a picture of my baby,\u201d Hughes said through tears.<\/p>\n<p>The Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office said the investigation remains active, but detectives have not released information about a suspect or what led up to the shooting. According to police records, officers responded to more than 100 calls for service at the Paxon Shopping Center in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Denmark\u2019s sister, Felicia Hughes, said her brother was not lingering at the shopping center that night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis area has been known for foolishness,\u201d she said. \u201cMy brother worked across the street at Nationwide. That\u2019s why he was over here, he wasn\u2019t hanging out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Denmark had worked at\u00a0Nationwide Mattress and Furniture for nearly 10 years, where he was known as a dedicated employee and a source of joy for both coworkers and customers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll never find anybody that\u2019s going to replace him,\u201d said coworker\u00a0Travis Ross, who added that Denmark trained him when he first started. \u201cHe was proud to tell people he did. I took it as an honor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Family described Denmark as a devoted father of two and a man with a contagious spirit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s quiet now,\u201d Felicia Hughes said. \u201cCorey was the life of the party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He was also known for his love for the Florida Gators.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe made all of us wear Florida Gator colors for his service,\u201d Felicia recalled.<\/p>\n<p>Denmark also loved to dance, a memory his mother holds close.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was the last time I danced with my son,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Felicia said the family has endured loss before, but Corey\u2019s death has reopened old wounds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have not moved on,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re still in the same spot as the night it happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, the family is calling for justice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe deserves justice,\u201d Felicia said. \u201cJustice means sitting in a courtroom watching you pay for what you did. It could be your brother, your father, your mother, you\u2019d want justice the same way we want it. We deserve answers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office confirmed the case remains active.
