{"id":505954,"date":"2026-01-10T10:49:18","date_gmt":"2026-01-10T10:49:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/505954\/"},"modified":"2026-01-10T10:49:18","modified_gmt":"2026-01-10T10:49:18","slug":"inmate-dies-after-being-in-hospital-for-over-a-year-investigation-underway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/505954\/","title":{"rendered":"Inmate dies after being in hospital for over a year, investigation underway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>JACKSONVILLE, Fla. <\/strong> \u2013 The Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office said Friday that it is investigating two separate in-custody deaths that occurred on Thursday and Friday morning. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">JSO said one of the incidents under investigation involved 41-year-old Matthew Jason Hutchins, who police say was originally being held in state prison on a second-degree murder charge before he was transferred into JSO\u2019s custody on April 4, 2024. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/local\/2026\/01\/02\/inmate-65-dies-in-jso-custody-after-contracting-infectious-disease-during-medical-procedure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/local\/2026\/01\/02\/inmate-65-dies-in-jso-custody-after-contracting-infectious-disease-during-medical-procedure\/\">Inmate, 65, dies in JSO custody after contracting infectious disease during medical procedure<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">On Dec. 30, 2024, JSO took Hutchins to a local hospital, where he remained under care until his death on Friday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cHis death continues to be investigated as a natural death, and we are awaiting autopsy results from the Medical Examiner\u2019s Office once that is completed,\u201d the agency said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The other death under investigation involved a 61-year-old man, who was arrested Thursday evening after being arrested at the intersection of Beach Boulevard and St. Johns Bluff Road. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The agency said the investigation is being handled as an apparent suicide. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The man was originally arrested for trespassing, failure to leave property after being ordered to do so by the property owner, violating a pedestrian safety ordinance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Police say that he became unresponsive as the officer was filling out the arrest paperwork.
