{"id":506037,"date":"2026-01-10T11:36:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-10T11:36:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/506037\/"},"modified":"2026-01-10T11:36:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-10T11:36:10","slug":"pbs-news-confirms-weekend-team-will-air-final-broadcast-on-sunday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/506037\/","title":{"rendered":"PBS News Confirms Weekend Team Will Air Final Broadcast on Sunday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cPBS News Weekend\u201d will sign off for good on Sunday after federal budget cuts forced the broadcaster to \u201crework\u201d its staffing and programming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPBS News Hour\u201d anchors Amna Nawaz and Geoff Bennett shared the update during their Friday evening broadcast, where they invited weekend anchor John Yang to reflect on his time at PBS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to note a change for us here at PBS News,\u201d Bennett started off before handing over the update to Nawaz, who added, \u201cDue to federal budget cuts, we\u2019ve had to make the difficult decision to rework our staffing and programming. And, this Sunday, our \u2018PBS News Weekend\u2019 team will sign off the air.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before turning the floor over to Yang, Nawaz expressed just how much the PBS family will miss the newsman.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you doesn\u2019t even begin to cover it,\u201d she added. \u201cYou and the team have done incredible storytelling and covered major breaking news every weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yang took a moment to highlight the major news moments his \u201csmall but mighty team\u201d had covered over the last several years, including the October 7 attacks, the first assassination attempt on President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden dropping out of the 2024 presidential race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re proud of the creativity and the dedication they brought to each and every segment week in and week out,\u201d he continued. \u201cI\u2019ll be leaving PBS News at the end of the month, as I step back from full time work. But, I\u2019m delighted to say, that many members of this team will be sticking around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Per Yang, some of his staffers will be \u201cproducing some exciting new programming\u201d that\u2019s set to arrive in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>Watch the news update above.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<a class=\"the-wrap-read-more__image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/media-platforms\/journalism\/terry-gross-stephen-colbert-fresh-air-npr-cpb-dissolved-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Terry-Gross-Late-Show-1-8-26.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"Terry Gross on the Jan. 8, 2026 edition of &quot;The Late Show with Stephen Colbert&quot; (CBS)\"   data-portal-copyright=\"TheWrap\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"1\"\/>\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The announcement comes mere days after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/media-platforms\/politics\/corporation-public-broadcasting-cpb-shut-down-trump-defund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Corporation for Public Broadcasting shared<\/a> that its Board of Directors had voted to dissolve the organization following Congress\u2019 rescission of all federal funding.<\/p>\n<p>The CPB had previously\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/npr-pbs-parent-company-shut-down-trump-cuts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced plans to wind down back in August<\/a>, but the Monday vote made it official.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor more than half a century, CPB existed to ensure that all Americans had access to trusted news, educational programming and local storytelling,\u201d CPB President and CEO Patricia Harrison said in a statement. She noted that dissolving the organization was a necessary move to protect the integrity and independence of public media.<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump targeted National Public Radio and PBS following the 2024 election, when he formally called on Congress to cancel public broadcaster funding.
