(Graphic courtesy of SDUSD)<\/p>\n<p>The San Diego Unified School District <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegounified.org\/about\/board_of_education\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">board<\/a> Tuesday approved a phone-free school day policy for the 2025-26 school year, with implementation beginning Aug. 11.<\/p>\n<p>The directive applies to all students in grades TK\u201312, requiring phones to be turned off and out of sight, such as in backpacks, during regular school hours.<\/p>\n<p>SDUSD is an early adopter of California\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2024\/09\/23\/governor-newsom-signs-legislation-to-limit-the-use-of-smartphones-during-school-hours\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Phone-Free School Act<\/a>, the state law requiring all public school districts to adopt policies by July 1, 2026. <\/p>\n<p>The guidelines aim to limit classroom interruptions, foster peer connections and promote healthy technology boundaries to support students\u2019 academic success and mental well-being, according to the district. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cLimiting the use of phones during the school day creates focused learning environments where students can fully engage with their education and build meaningful connections with their peers,\u201d Superintendent Fabiola Bagula said. <\/p>\n<p>The policy prohibits phone use during regular school hours as defined by each school\u2019s bell schedule. Use is allowed before and after school, with high schools also permitting it before the first bell, during lunch and passing periods.<\/p>\n<p>Exceptions are allowed for students with specific learning or health needs, including: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Emergencies or safety threat<\/li>\n<li>Medical necessity (doctor or mental health provider verified)<\/li>\n<li>Individualized Education Program or Section 504 plan accommodation<\/li>\n<li>Instructional use explicitly authorized by educators<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Phone-free school day policy details, frequently asked questions and resources for families are available at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegounified.org\/about\/policies_procedures\/student_cell_phone_use\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sandiegounified.org\/PhoneFreePolicy<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"San Diego Unified\u2019s phone-free school day policy will begin Aug. 11.
