{"id":507279,"date":"2026-01-10T23:59:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-10T23:59:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/507279\/"},"modified":"2026-01-10T23:59:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-10T23:59:12","slug":"zohran-mamdanis-huge-nycpress-office-proves-relentless-spin-will-be-priority-no-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/507279\/","title":{"rendered":"Zohran Mamdani&#8217;s huge NYCpress office proves relentless spin will be priority No. 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to the spin zone, New York: Courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/10\/us-news\/mamdani-makes-it-harder-for-the-feds-to-monitor-tren-de-aragua-gang-at-rikers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s<\/a> mammoth communications team.<\/p>\n<p>The Post reported Monday that Hizzoner\u2019s press office is<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/05\/us-news\/mamdani-taps-longtime-bernie-sanders-staffer-ex-nyt-reporter-anna-bahr-for-communications-director\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> expected to be the largest in city history<\/a>, packed with public-relations heavy-hitters boasting serious lefty bona fides.<\/p>\n<p>Putting the \u201ccommie\u201d in \u201ccommunications,\u201d ex-Bernie Sanders staffers Anna Bahr and Joe Calvello will serve as communications director and press secretary, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>His current speechwriter, Julian Gerson, deputy communications director, Lekha Sunder, and campaign communications aide Dora Pekec will also staff the Department of Propaganda \u2014 er, Office of Communications.<\/p>\n<p>In case that isn\u2019t enough, he also created an<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/02\/us-news\/mayor-mamdani-hires-longtime-dsa-organizer-to-head-new-outreach-arm-of-nyc-to-energize-comrade-base\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> \u201cOffice of Mass Engagement\u201d <\/a>and named Democratic Socialist comrade Tascha Van Auken to head it.<\/p>\n<p>No matter what Mamdani does \u2014 even if he accomplishes nothing at all \u2014 his giant PR machine will be in overdrive selling hype, berating media types who don\u2019t march to their tune and blasting buzz on social media. <\/p>\n<p>Fattening up on comms more than any past mayor also show Mamdani\u2019s true priorities: Where other City Hall offices are supposed to deliver results for the people of New York City, the communications team\u2019s purpose is to deliver results for him.  <\/p>\n<p>No, it\u2019s not inherently wrong to seek a well-stocked press office; a mayor can get more done if everybody loves him.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the press despised Rudy Giuliani \u2014 the mayor who turned the city around from alternating slow and rapid decline to an unprecedented urban renaissance.<\/p>\n<p>Plus: Mamdani won City Hall thanks to new-media mastery, a stunning combo of algorithm-savvy viral videos, endlessly post-able slogans and made-for-Instagram branding that in just half a year brought him from 1% in the polls to a smashing victory in the Democratic primary. <\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s got zero experience in actually governing, or in running anything beyond a small office; is he really resolved to rise to his new responsibilities? <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not a good sign that, winking at the strategy that earned him so much online adulation, Mamdani\u2019s first full mayoral press conference ever was <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/07\/us-news\/zohran-mamdanis-first-city-hall-press-conference-as-mayor-is-with-fawning-influencers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a \u201cnew media\u201d junket packed with influencers<\/a> who lobbed softball questions.<\/p>\n<p>This style-over-substance approach may serve the new mayor\u2019s ego, but it won\u2019t do much for the rest of the city.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Welcome to the spin zone, New York: Courtesy of Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s mammoth communications team.
