(Photo by Diana Cavagnaro/Special for Times of San Diego)

“Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge” is more than a themed area; it’s a fully immersive world where fans can step directly into their Star Wars adventure.

Recently, the executive director of Liberty Station’s Visions Museum of Textile Art, Katrina Bruins, was thrilled to welcome Brenda Mercure, manager of design and development, and Joe Kucharski, senior costume designer from Disney Live Entertainment, for a presentation at San Diego Mesa College.

For the many Star Wars fans in the audience, this was nothing short of a dream come true.

The duo discussed the process of developing the costumes for Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida. These garments are worn by cast members throughout the parks, including at the “Rise of the Resistance” and “Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run” attractions, helping guests feel like they stepped onto another planet.

Creating these ensembles took three years from concept to final fittings, and this presentation offered a rare glimpse into this journey.

Mercure began the presentation and then turned the microphone over to Kucharski, who took the audience through the creative process. Some of the challenges they faced were creating comfortable clothes that didn’t look like a uniform, using fabrics that looked worn and distressed and improving functionality so they moved with the body. They brought attendees through the inspiration, the sketches and then the final designs.

One of the difficult tasks was developing the garment gaiters and Kucharski walked the audience through their evolution. He went on to discuss the team’s inventive use of fabric and technology, including methods for getting the most out of one roll of fabric. They also discussed custom weaves, PVC patches and name tags that helped shape the final look.

Once the costumes were ready, the project moved to fittings with the cast. When the sketches and samples are complete and the costumes meet the performers in the completed village, the true magic begins.

Brenda Mercure, Joe Kucharski and Katrina Bruins. But it takes people to make the dream a reality.”

This inspiring presentation was brought to campus by the Visions Museum of Textile Art, where the current exhibition, ARTwear, features works created with fiber and textile materials. It is on display through Jan. 31. Admission is free.

To plan your journey to a galaxy far, far away, visit: https://bit.ly/48cdceC.

Diana Cavagnaro is an internationally renowned Couture Milliner based in the Southern California area.
