A protest calling for the release of Nicol\u00e1s Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and urging President Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s administration to end its intervention in Venezuela<\/a>, is being held Saturday evening at Civic Garden Park in Downtown Dallas<\/a>.<\/p>\n

About 100 demonstrators chanted slogans and carried signs denouncing the military operation ordered by Trump on Jan. 3, which led to Maduro\u2019s capture in Caracas, the Venezuelan capital.<\/p>\n

Participants endured a biting cold afternoon as sharp gusts swept through Civic Garden Park, snapping the U.S. and Texas flags that lined the surrounding buildings.<\/p>\n

The event is organized by groups, including the Democratic Socialists of America North Texas.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Trump administration has made it extremely clear that they are willing to do whatever it takes to keep America on top of the world, including economic strangulation and open warfare with countries of the global south,\u201d said Saya Clarke, a spokesperson for the DSA North Texas. <\/p>\n

At the event was 38\u2011year\u2011old Jes\u00fas Mart\u00ednez, who is originally from Mexico and now lives in Dallas, working in construction.<\/p>\n

He said the Venezuelan people must come together and let the world know about the oppression they have lived under the Maduro regime, but he does not agree with Trump\u2019s decision to intervene militarily in the South American country.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump exceeded the powers granted to him by U.S. law and the Constitution,\u201d Mart\u00ednez said.<\/p>\n

Mart\u00ednez said while Maduro\u2019s oppression of his people may come to an end, Venezuela will now be subject to Trump\u2019s authority and desires.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow there will be another tyranny in Venezuela, one driven by oil, not by democracy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Trump administration maintains that Maduro is not the legitimate leader of Venezuela and argues he has effectively turned Venezuela into a criminal enterprise at the service of drug traffickers and terrorist groups.<\/p>\n

Maduro, who governed Venezuela for 13 years, and his wife were initially taken to a U.S. warship before being transferred to a federal prison in New York, where he now faces charges related to drug trafficking and terrorism.<\/p>\n

Maduro\u2019s arrest was carried out by U.S. special operations forces, including Delta Force, with the support of roughly 150 aircraft.<\/p>\n

Following his capture, the former Venezuelan strongman was first transported to the USS Iwo Jima in the Caribbean before being transferred to New York.<\/p>\n

Maduro is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n

On Jan. 5, he appeared before a Manhattan court, where he entered a plea of \u201cnot guilty\u201d to all charges.<\/p>\n
