{"id":507782,"date":"2026-01-11T05:07:26","date_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:07:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/507782\/"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:07:26","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:07:26","slug":"nyc-to-put-red-light-cameras-at-250-more-intersections-by-mid-february","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/507782\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC to put red-light cameras at 250 more intersections by mid-February"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The city will more than double the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/finance\/vehicles\/red-light-camera-violations.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">red-light cameras<\/a> in the five boroughs in the next five weeks, newly minted Transportation commissioner Mike Flynn announced Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRed light running is one of the most dangerous behaviors on our city\u2019s streets and puts all New Yorkers at risk,\u201d Flynn said in a statement. \u201cThat is why we are taking immediate action to ramp up the city\u2019s red light camera program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the next five weeks, the Department of Transportation aims to add cameras to 50 intersections a week, so that 250 additional cameras will be in service by Friday, Feb. 13.<\/p>\n<p>There are currently cameras at 150 of the roughly 13,700 intersections with traffic signals citywide, automatically issuing tickets to the registered owner of any vehicle that runs a red.<\/p>\n<p>Up until 2024, that was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2024\/02\/22\/more-nyc-red-light-cameras-will-save-lives-says-dot-chief-in-plea-to-albany\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the maximum number of intersections<\/a> allowed by state law. That number was increased to 600 in October 2024.<\/p>\n<p>A DOT spokesperson said in a statement Friday that the city is aiming to have the 600 intersections monitored by red-light cameras by the end of 2026.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t immediately clear Friday where the new cameras would be added. A DOT spokesperson said locations with a history of collisions would be prioritized.<\/p>\n<p>DOT data show an average drop in red-light running by 73% at intersections monitored by cameras.
