{"id":507856,"date":"2026-01-11T05:57:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:57:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/507856\/"},"modified":"2026-01-11T05:57:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T05:57:12","slug":"down-arrow-button-icon-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/507856\/","title":{"rendered":"Down Arrow Button Icon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the Treasury Department looks to ensure investors continue absorbing the fresh supply of debt it must sell, growing competition from companies issuing their own bonds could send rates higher, according to Apollo Chief Economist Torsten Slok.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.apolloacademy.com\/growing-ig-issuance-will-put-upward-pressure-on-rates-and-credit-spreads\/\" class=\"\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.apolloacademy.com\/growing-ig-issuance-will-put-upward-pressure-on-rates-and-credit-spreads\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apolloacademy.com\/growing-ig-issuance-will-put-upward-pressure-on-rates-and-credit-spreads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">note on Saturday<\/a>, he pointed out that Wall Street estimates for the volume of investment grade debt that\u2019s on the way this year reach as high as $2.25 trillion.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s as the AI boom increasingly sends companies, including hyperscalers and adjacent firms, to the bond market to fund massive investments in data centers and other infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe significant increase in hyperscaler issuance raises questions about who will be the marginal buyer of IG paper,\u201d Slok said. \u201cWill it come from Treasury purchases and hence put upward pressure on the level of rates? Failure to draw enough investors raises the risk of so-called fiscal dominance, or when a central bank must step into to finance widening deficits.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what former Treasury Secretary <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/01\/05\/janet-yellen-warns-38-trillion-national-debt-fiscal-dominance-eric-leeper-heather-long\/\" class=\"\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/01\/05\/janet-yellen-warns-38-trillion-national-debt-fiscal-dominance-eric-leeper-heather-long\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/01\/05\/janet-yellen-warns-38-trillion-national-debt-fiscal-dominance-eric-leeper-heather-long\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Janet Yellen warned of<\/a> last weekend, during\u00a0a\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/webcasts\/2026\/future-of-the-fed\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aeaweb.org\/webcasts\/2026\/future-of-the-fed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">panel<\/a>\u00a0hosted by the American Economic Association. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe preconditions for fiscal dominance are clearly strengthening,\u201d she said, noting debt is on a steep upward trajectory toward 150% of GDP over the next three decades.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, he\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/12\/27\/us-debt-38-trillion-hedge-funds-bond-yields-rates-treasury-market\/\" class=\"\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/12\/27\/us-debt-38-trillion-hedge-funds-bond-yields-rates-treasury-market\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/12\/27\/us-debt-38-trillion-hedge-funds-bond-yields-rates-treasury-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">holders of U.S. debt have shifted drastically<\/a> over the past decade, tilting more toward profit-driven private investors and away from foreign governments that are less sensitive to prices.<\/p>\n<p>That threatens to turn the U.S. financial system more fragile in times of market stress, according to Geng Ngarmboonanant, a managing director at JPMorgan and former deputy chief of staff to Yellen during her tenure at Treasury.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign governments accounted for more than 40% of Treasury bond holdings in the early 2010s, up from just over 10% in the mid-1990s, he wrote in a\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/12\/26\/opinion\/national-debt-owners-lenders-crisis.html\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/12\/26\/opinion\/national-debt-owners-lenders-crisis.html\">New York Times\u00a0op-ed<\/a>\u00a0last month.
