{"id":508527,"date":"2026-01-11T12:50:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-11T12:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/508527\/"},"modified":"2026-01-11T12:50:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T12:50:09","slug":"police-arrest-4-over-fake-kidnapping-prank-in-upstate-ny","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/508527\/","title":{"rendered":"Police arrest 4 over fake kidnapping prank in Upstate NY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OOR2F2YVKZEBZJ5GWDKC3G55EQ\">Four people have been arrested for a fake kidnapping prank, according to New York State Police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZJF4VK4W75H33AFDUZXKR3WDEQ\">Police said they received a report on Jan. 7 around 1 p.m. that a vehicle was traveling on the I-87 Northway in Saratoga County with a passenger who was displaying a handwritten sign that said \u201chelp!! being kidnapped!!\u201d A vehicle matching a 911 caller\u2019s description was located on the highway in Malta, N.Y., and stopped by police during a \u201csignificant law enforcement response\u201d that caused a temporary shutdown of I-87 southbound.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PBSNW5L5LBGDPODHRYMXFG54JQ\">The 18-year-old driver and three passengers were removed from the vehicle and detained. An investigation determined that all four of them were aware of the sign displayed as an alleged \u201cjoke\u201d and that no kidnapping occurred.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RK6GPPSQIJHR3IUS565BTZBIEE\">Jasmine R. Barber, 20, of Champlain, N.Y., Emily R. Ferdinandi, 20, of Champlain, N.Y., and two 18-year-olds involved were each charged with Falsely Reporting an Incident in the third degree. The names of the driver and the other 18-year-old were not disclosed; Barber and Ferdinandi were passengers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NJRD5UTRC5EA3MK55Q2ODO2PRU\">They were arrested and transported to State Police of Saratoga for processing. Each was issued a ticket to appear in Malta Town Court on Feb. 5 and released.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KLUFF3GPANHUZET7K436HJIIRM\">\u201cState Police wants to emphasize that falsely reporting a kidnapping is not a prank or a mistake; it\u2019s a serious crime with real consequences,\u201d NYS Police <a href=\"https:\/\/troopers.ny.gov\/news\/state-police-arrest-four-following-staged-kidnapping-prank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/troopers.ny.gov\/news\/state-police-arrest-four-following-staged-kidnapping-prank\">said<\/a>. \u201cWhen a false any false emergency report is made, emergency responders rush into action, diverting police, medical, and rescue resources away from people who may genuinely need help. Families and communities experience fear and trauma, and in some cases, false reports can even put officers and bystanders in danger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WO4JGRAFARFPLCYCSC6UVBP6XQ\">Malta is located in Saratoga County, about 25 miles north of Albany and 150 miles south of Champlain.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Four people have been arrested for a fake kidnapping prank, according to New York State Police.
