\u201cToday\u201d star Jill Martin is still dealing with health issues stemming from her cancer battle.<\/a><\/p>\n

The 49-year-old journalist revealed that she has to undergo emergency surgery due to complications from treatment for breast cancer.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust when you think the fight is over, life reminds you that healing isn\u2019t always linear,\u201d Martin told \u201cToday\u201d <\/a>on Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s preventative and proactive \u2014 an emergency only in the sense that if we don\u2019t act now, it could turn into something much bigger,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>Martin added.\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cIt\u2019s important to say this clearly: my cancer is not back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Elisa Port, chief of breast surgery for the Mount Sinai Health System, who treated Martin,\u00a0explained to \u201cToday\u201d that Martin\u2019s treatment caused a breakdown in her skin.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen a person has a mastectomy, obviously the goal is to get all the breast cancer out,\u201d\u00a0said Port. \u201cBut there\u2019s another goal, especially in a\u00a0BRCA mutation carrier\u00a0like Jill \u2026 to get all the breast tissue out. And when you do that, the skin left behind can be very thin. \u2026 It\u2019s just a lot for the skin to tolerate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Port also said that if they don\u2019t perform surgery immediately on Martin,\u00a0she could suffer a sudden opening of the wound which could lead to an infection.<\/p>\n

Martin will be in the hospital for at least three nights and then spend a few weeks recovering at home.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel worn out and grateful all at once,\u201d she shared. \u201cSometimes it feels like it never really ends. And still \u2014 I\u2019m grateful. Grateful for early action, for great doctors, and for the chance to keep moving forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

Martin announced her breast cancer diagnosis in July 2023 during an\u00a0episode of the NBC show<\/a>. The journalist revealed she would undergo a double mastectomy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She went on to have 16 lymph nodes removed and underwent four months of chemotherapy, reconstructive surgery, three weeks of radiation, and a preventative procedure to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In Oct. 2024, Martin told Us Weekly<\/a>, \u201cI\u2019ve spent the last year just trying to save my life. And now, I\u2019m dealing with the mental trauma of it all.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I think\u00a0a lot of\u00a0survivors will tell you, it\u2019s never over. It\u2019s not like, \u2018When are you done?\u2019 or \u2018Is it over?\u2019 It\u2019s never over,\u201d she added. \u201cThis\u00a0is a fight I will fight my entire life. I think about chemotherapy every single day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Martin also explained to the outlet that it\u2019s her \u201cmission in life\u201d to raise awareness for the disease and to encourage others to get tested for breast cancer.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\u201cToday\u201d star Jill Martin is still dealing with health issues stemming from her cancer battle.
