{"id":50909,"date":"2025-07-09T08:21:14","date_gmt":"2025-07-09T08:21:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/50909\/"},"modified":"2025-07-09T08:21:14","modified_gmt":"2025-07-09T08:21:14","slug":"arizona-families-recall-memories-where-devastating-floods-hit-in-texas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/50909\/","title":{"rendered":"Arizona families recall memories where devastating floods hit in Texas"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p data-v-bd34935e=\"\"><strong>PHOENIX<\/strong> &#8211; Devastating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox10phoenix.com\/news\/updates-texas-floods-death-toll-rises-104-10-camp-mystic-girls-remain-missing\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>floods have torn through Kerr County, Texas<\/strong><\/a>, pushing the death toll past 100.<\/p>\n<p data-v-bd34935e=\"\">At least 161 people remain missing, including five campers and one counselor from Camp Mystic, an all-girls Christian summer camp.<\/p>\n<p data-v-bd34935e=\"\">We&#8217;re hearing from Arizonans who know the area well \u2013 a sort of home away from home.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-bd34935e=\"\">Local perspective:<\/p>\n<p data-v-bd34935e=\"\">Arizona families are now sharing their stories and memories of time spent along the Guadalupe River, where the floods occurred.<\/p>\n<p data-v-bd34935e=\"\">There are about seven summer camps in this part of Central Texas, where more than a dozen campers from Camp Mystic lost their lives.<\/p>\n<p data-v-bd34935e=\"\">Just two miles from Camp Mystic is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Camp+Waldemar\/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x865945b6514a14d3:0x85f9836f35bc3a5f?sa=X&amp;ved=1t:242&amp;ictx=111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Camp Waldemar<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-bd34935e=\"\">A Valley mother shared her experience, as her daughter was a first-time counselor at Camp Waldemar the night the storms hit.<\/p>\n<p data-v-bd34935e=\"\">&#8220;Everybody just started calling me and said, &#8216;Have you heard from Annabel or have you heard from Annabel?&#8217; And I said, &#8216;No,'&#8221; Marci Symington said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-bd34935e=\"\">For families like Symington&#8217;s, summer camp in the Texas Hill Country is a family tradition and a rite of passage. Three generations have spent their summers in the same cabins at Camp Waldemar, including her mother, three older sisters, and now her daughters.<\/p>\n<p data-v-bd34935e=\"\">&#8220;As soon as we found out that we had two girls, I signed them up,&#8221; Symington said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-bd34935e=\"\">After eight summers as a camper, Symington&#8217;s daughter, Annabel, returned as a counselor for the summer of 2025. (Photo by Desiree Rios for The Washington Post via Getty I <\/p>\n<p>  \u2018Her campers were really scared\u2019 <\/p>\n<p data-v-bd34935e=\"\">A peaceful scene filled with canoe races and memories turned to devastation in the early hours of July 4. &#8220;Her campers were really scared, and they&#8217;d woken her up,&#8221; Symington said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-bd34935e=\"\">Without her cell phone or service, Symington didn&#8217;t expect to hear from Annabel, waiting 48 hours to hear her daughter&#8217;s voice. &#8220;We were all crying. So just joy and relief,&#8221; Symington said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-bd34935e=\"\">A message from Camp Waldemar notified parents that all campers and counselors were accounted for, but that was not the case for Camp Mystic, just two miles away.<\/p>\n<p data-v-bd34935e=\"\">&#8220;I mean, like thinking about what she was going through&#8230;&#8221; Symington said, reflecting on her daughter&#8217;s experience. Her daughter is still in Texas and plans to return to the Valley soon.<\/p>\n<p> &#8216;A slice of heaven&#8217; <\/p>\n<p data-v-bd34935e=\"\">For Fields Moseley, whose parents retired to the Texas Hill Country, summers, Thanksgivings and Christmases were spent on the Guadalupe River, a familiar setting now devastated by floods.<\/p>\n<p data-v-bd34935e=\"\">&#8220;I think for my father it was a slice of heaven,&#8221; Moseley said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-bd34935e=\"\">His father, Fred Moseley, was deeply involved in the tight-knit community, teaching hunting at all-boys camps, serving on the school board and participating in the Rotary Club.<\/p>\n<p data-v-bd34935e=\"\">&#8220;It&#8217;s not about how long it&#8217;s going to take to recover, but just how integral it&#8217;s been to so many families across Texas,&#8221; Moseley said, reflecting on the community&#8217;s deep roots.<\/p>\n<p>      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox10phoenix.com\/tag\/weather\/severe-weather\" class=\"tags-tag\" data-v-bd34935e=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Severe Weather<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox10phoenix.com\/tag\/us\/tx\" class=\"tags-tag\" data-v-bd34935e=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Texas<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox10phoenix.com\/tag\/us\/az\" class=\"tags-tag\" data-v-bd34935e=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arizona<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox10phoenix.com\/tag\/news\" class=\"tags-tag\" data-v-bd34935e=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"PHOENIX &#8211; Devastating floods have torn through Kerr County, Texas, pushing the death toll past 100.
