Despite being pushed to seven games by the Toronto Blue Jays, the Dodgers came out victorious.

Entering the MLB offseason, fans were curious to see what the Dodgers would do to push for a three-peat. So far this offseason, Los Angeles has made a couple of quality moves.

At this point in time, their biggest addition was former New York Mets reliever Edwin Diaz. He was signed to a lucrative three-year, $69 million contract.

Looking at the rest of the offseason, the Dodgers could consider pursuing a big trade that might have come available. That trade would include Los Angeles pursuing a trade with the Chicago Cubs for second baseman Nico Hoerner.

After the Cubs were able to sign star free agent third baseman Alex Bregman to a five-year, $175 million contract, Hoerner could be made available for trade. If that does happen, the Dodgers should consider pursuing him.

Nico Hoerner Is a Perfect Trade Target for the Los Angeles Dodgers

Right now, Los Angeles is projected to start Hyeseong Kim at second base in 2026. He’s a quality player, but he is far from being an elite option.

Hoerner would immediately give the Dodgers an upgrade at the position.

MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today immediately suggested the idea of Chicago trading Hoerner after signing Bregman.

“The Cubs now can move Matt Shaw to second base and trade Nico Hoerner or simply make Shaw a super utility player,” Nightengale wrote on X.

During the 2025 MLB season with the Cubs, Hoerner played in 156 games. He hit seven home runs to go along with 61 RBI and also produced a slash line of .297/.345/.394.

Those numbers would slide nicely into the Los Angeles lineup. Hoerner is also a threat on the base paths, which would be a welcome addition for Dave Roberts. He’s exactly the kind of upgrade that could help power the Dodgers to a third straight championship.

What Would It Take to Acquire Horner from the Cubs?

Making a move for Hoerner would not come cheap for Los Angeles. He’s a quality player and the Dodgers would need to pay a quality price.

Back on December 24, a suggested trade package was brought up by ClutchPoints. In order to get him, Los Angeles would give up second baseman Hyeseong Kim and right-hander River Ryan. That might be a bit too cheap, but it’s a starting point.

That suggested trade should be taken with a grain of salt. It’s just an idea with no concrete backing. However, the Dodgers have the pieces to get a deal done if they choose to pursue it.

Horner is just 28 years old. He would be a potential long-term addition if Los Angeles were to acquire him. It’s the kind of move that could put the Dodgers in a much better position for years to come.

Expect to hear more rumors surrounding Chicago and Los Angeles. Hoerner may not be made available, but if he is the Dodgers should come calling.

Evan Massey Evan Massey is a sports reporter and analyst located in Indianapolis, Indiana who covers the NFL, NBA, MLB, WNBA, and college sports.
