{"id":509339,"date":"2026-01-11T21:25:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-11T21:25:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/509339\/"},"modified":"2026-01-11T21:25:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T21:25:10","slug":"sudans-government-return-to-capital-after-nearly-3-years-of-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/509339\/","title":{"rendered":"Sudan&#8217;s government return to capital after nearly 3 years of war"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Sudan&#8217;s military-led government has returned to the country&#8217;s capital after nearly three years of operating from its wartime base in the eastern city of Port Sudan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Sudan&#8217;s Prime Minister Kamil Idris told reporters on Sunday that the &#8220;government of hope&#8221; was officially back in Khartoum and would begin efforts to improve services for the city&#8217;s beleaguered residents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The military was forced out by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) when civil war erupted between the two sides in 2023. The army recaptured it in a significant breakthrough last March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Khartoum has been recovering from years of fighting. Roughly five million fled the city at the height of the conflict, according to the UN.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Those unwilling or unable to leave described a brutal RSF occupation, which included mass looting and fighters taking over civilian homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\"><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cdxgrj5rqnwo\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"noopener\">Huge swathes of the city lie in ruins<\/a>. In October, UN official Ugochi Daniels reported that basic services were &#8220;barely functioning&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">On Sunday, Idris said the government would work on improving electricity, water, healthcare and education in Khartoum. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">He also declared that 2026 would be a &#8220;year of peace&#8221; for Sudan, where at least 150,000 people have died since the war erupt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The UN has described the situation as the world&#8217;s worst humanitarian crisis and around 12 million people have been forced from their homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The war began after <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-africa-65297714\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"noopener\">the head of the army, General Abdel Fattah-al Burhan fell out with his deputy and RSF leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo<\/a>, leading to a vicious struggle for power.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Both the RSF and the Sudanese military have been accused of committing atrocities throughout the conflict.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">International efforts to broker peace have failed and both sides are backed by foreign powers who have poured weapons into the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has come under particular scrutiny recently over <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/videos\/cly5p1vkm39o\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"noopener\">allegations of supporting the RSF<\/a>, which it strongly denies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Sudan&#8217;s military-led government has returned to the country&#8217;s capital after nearly three years of operating from its wartime&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":509340,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[50,103],"class_list":{"0":"post-509339","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-world","8":"tag-news","9":"tag-world"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@us\/115878581749254439","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/509339","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=509339"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/509339\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/509340"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=509339"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=509339"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=509339"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
