{"id":509396,"date":"2026-01-11T21:55:15","date_gmt":"2026-01-11T21:55:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/509396\/"},"modified":"2026-01-11T21:55:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T21:55:15","slug":"lady-who-solved-problems-in-her-sleep-is-among-inventors-honoured-at-national-archives-of-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/509396\/","title":{"rendered":"Lady who solved problems in her sleep is among inventors honoured at National Archives of Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Myra Juliet Farrell always liked to think about a problem before going to bed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She often solved them while asleep.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The self-professed &#8220;inventress&#8221;, born in Ireland and who grew up in Broken Hill before moving to Sydney, recorded at least 25 patents for different inventions throughout her life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Her creations started at the age of 10, with a self-locking safety pin, and later went on to include a tuberculosis inhaler, a boneless corset, a mulberry picker, stitch-less buttons, a baby carrier inspired by a marsupial, and she even pitched a bulletproof fence to the military.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Pram\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/d719f69f60a0b09b780e90f95f99699a.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Ms Farrell&#8217;s plans for a pram hood improvement. (Supplied: National Archives of Australia)<\/p>\n<p>Remarkable creative process<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">National Archives of Australia curator Lucie Shawcross said Ms Farrell was somnambulant \u2014 a sleepwalker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;She would have a problem in her head before she went to bed and while she was asleep, she would figure out how to solve that problem and then she would write the solution backwards to the problem,&#8221; Ms Shawcross said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She would scrawl anything from detailed designs to shopping lists on whatever material she could find \u2014 often walls or sheets or blankets.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;In the morning she&#8217;d have to hold up that writing to a mirror and transcribe it so she could write it properly.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"National Archives of Australia (NAA) curator Lucie Shawcross\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/068c27eb66362581a4328f5d1563cc21.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">National Archives of Australia curator Lucie Shawcross said Ms Farrell would solve problems in her sleep. (ABC News: James Tugwell)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">An article on page four of the Dubbo Western Age in August 1915 said Ms Farrell &#8220;might justly claim to be the most versatile woman in the Commonwealth&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;The remarkable little lady has been inventing since she was a tiny child,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  the article said.<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Corset\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/bfa813683f318d6492d2666f132ef536.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Myra Juliet Farrell&#8217;s patent for a boneless corset known as the improved accouchement recovery binder belt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;She says she always felt as long as she could remember that she could see and do things which other people could not.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Yet she dwells in our midst unknown, almost in obscurity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Shawcross was surprised she had never previously heard of Ms Farrell and her inventions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Maybe she just didn&#8217;t have that marketing, or maybe they just weren&#8217;t at the right place at the right time. I feel there&#8217;s a bit of luck involved in it as well,&#8221; Ms Shawcross said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In an article from the Sun in March 1945, Ms Farrell said as much.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I have never made my fortune from them because I&#8217;m not a good businesswoman,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Australian inventors and patents<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Farrell is part of a new exhibition In real life at the National Archives of Australia in Canberra, featuring Australian inventors, patents and trademarks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The exhibition showcases drawings and designs displayed beside the physical object.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;The whole idea is bringing our records to life and seeing our records in your life,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  Ms Shawcross said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It includes items such as <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-09-22\/australian-design-hills-hoist-history-clothesline\/11524676\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/11524676\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Hills hoist<\/a>, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2021-12-22\/love-affair-with-the-goon-bag-endures\/100706484\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/100706484\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the goon bag<\/a>, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-04-16\/tupperware-plastic-container-inspired-generations-of-fans\/102224914\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/102224914\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tupperware<\/a>, the half-flush toilet, the Sebel chair, KerPlunk, polymer bank notes, spray-on skin, the pedestrian push-button, the Ford ute, and a pineapple peeler.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There is a section dedicated to the invention of the stump camera by Warren Berkery, who led TV coverage of the launch of World Series Cricket.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The exhibition is about inventors, innovators and opportunists. I&#8217;m not sure which one of those applies to me,&#8221; Mr Berkery said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We just did something we considered had to be done.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;We built it, and it worked and it became part of cricket coverage, so I can&#8217;t whinge about that.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">These days, stump cam is an integral part of the coverage of the summer of cricket.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A scientist with a microscope.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/0b8bfb4d4dd2f3ddc5b5a0e045ab9209.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Doug Waterhouse, inventor of Aeroguard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There is also a section of the exhibition dedicated to CSIRO-designed Aerogard, which became a household name after it was used by Queen Elizabeth II on her visit to Canberra in 1963.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">At the time, journalists reported on a distinct lack of flies around the monarch.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;If the queen uses it, so should we,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  Ms Shawcross said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;After that it became quite popular.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Patent\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/8b70947ce3b498cd920c2ba1eddb695d.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Not all patents made it to the production phase. (ABC News: James Tugwell)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Not all of the designs on display made it to the construction phase: plans for a three-in-one kettle, table lamp and alarm clock were never made.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;As they go through the exhibition, people will see products they are familiar with, but they may not have known it was an Australian invention,&#8221; Ms Shawcross said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;Often people feel like maybe archives are a little bit boring \u2014 maybe there&#8217;s not much in there for them. But, actually, in here, you&#8217;ll see it impacts us all.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There&#8217;s a wall in the exhibition for young inventors to draw their creations of the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Shawcross hopes they&#8217;re inspired by the Australian inventing spirit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Digging into the archives makes you think \u2014 what other stories are out there?&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;What&#8217;s happening now that, in 100 years, you&#8217;re going to hear about this amazing person?&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Myra Juliet Farrell always liked to think about a problem before going to bed.
