Bayern Munich return to the Bundesliga for a home game against VfL Wolfsburg. The game was overwhelmingly in their favour, but the first half was not at all what one expected. Wolfsburg dominated, playing sharp, fast attacking football and Bayern found themselves overwhelmed. With an extraordinary second half comeback, the home team managed an incredible 8-1 victory. Here are the awards from this tale of two halves.<\/p>\n
Jersey Swap \u2014 D\u017eenan Pej\u010dinovi\u0107<\/p>\n
The young striker looked sharp, dangerous and terrorized Bayern all of first half. His goal was well orchestrated and perfectly scored. Having come off an excellent performance at Freiburg the previous game, it was simply a case of him continuing an excellent streak of performances. He deserves the consolation price for what was otherwise an awful game for Wolfsburg.<\/p>\n
Der Kaiser \u2014 Konrad Laimer<\/p>\n
Things did not start too well for Konrad Laimer this game. In the goal conceded by Bayern in the first half, Laimer was the last man on the ball. That being said, Bayern got back on top of their game and so did Laimer.<\/p>\n
He did best what is expected of any inverted full-back \u2014 contribute to the buildup and back the attackers in the final third. He registered an assist to Michael Olise and made a solid attempt himself. Defensively, he\u2019s handled aerial duels and interceptions smoothly as well, making this a very solid game from him.<\/p>\n
A close second has been Dayot Upamecano. The central defender put up a good fight.<\/p>\n
Der Fussballgott \u2014 Aleksander Pavlovi\u0107<\/p>\n
Just like with Laimer, the start to the game was not good for the midfield duo either. Aleksander Pavlovi\u0107 and Tom Bischof had a rocky start, and resultantly, lost the centre.<\/p>\n
This was the object of a Wolfsburg daydream who had a field day playing rapid one touch sequences. Objectively very pleasing attacking ball, but bad for Bayern.<\/p>\n
Later, with enough time to settle in the game, the midfield improved. One could argue that both the youngsters had a similarly decent performance. I\u2019d contest that Pavlovi\u0107 held an edge \u2014 he is known for his incredible passing but where he edges over Bischof in particular is how stable he is defensively.<\/p>\n
Regaining lost possession, protecting the attack and helping them progress \u2014 Pavlovi\u0107 did his usual quiet, but crucial defensive work so the attack could work their magic uninterrupted.<\/p>\n
Der Bomber \u2014 Luis D\u00edaz<\/p>\n
Oh no, the player Bayern bought for a lot of money is very good at his job! His play at wing was dominant and he scored two goals and registered two assists!<\/p>\n
There is no attacker who can accelerate in bursts, press like his life depends on it, thrive in tight spaces and weave through them in ease, absolutely boss 1v1 situations and still have enough in him to shoot like that. That\u2019s a Luis D\u00edaz only thing.<\/p>\n
To find a more suited player to Vincent Kompany\u2019s system is impossible. Bayern won, but so did football itself.<\/p>\n
Meister of the Match \u2014 Michael Olise<\/p>\n
I am rather wary of handing out big terms to players. The hype train may have ruined my peace, but I\u2019m willing to get back on it for Michael Olise. He is easily in the conversation for the best Bayern buys and more so, in the top right wingers conversation. Every year after Robben\u2019s retirement, one can point out a winger who was touted to be his replacement. It was all only partially correct, until Olise came into the picture.<\/p>\n
In this comparison, I want to point out one factor that was crucial tonight. It seems like Olise has more of an eye for his teammates than Robben did. The Dutchman was more a solo-flyer and enjoyed scoring his own goals but Olise would rather spot the right person to score.<\/p>\n
The repeated scanning to find someone to pass to, especially Luis D\u00edaz tonight and Harry Kane is testament to his unselfishness and his extraordinary work ethic.<\/p>\n
Additionally, it\u2019s not everyday you see a winger winning as many tackles as him. That is what makes him a complete attacker.<\/p>\n
