Former EastEnders<\/a> star Derek Martin has sadly died at the age of 92. The actor, who played Charlie Slater<\/a> on the soap, passed away yesterday (10 January), according to a statement from his agent Sharon Henry. <\/p>\n

“It is with great sadness that I can confirm that our beloved client Derek Martin passed away on 10th January 2026. For over 50 years, Derek was a truly authentic working-class voice in British television and film,” Henry said (via The Independent<\/a>).<\/p>\n

“It was a privilege to be a part of his creative journey in a career which included highlights such as Law And Order for the BBC and two series of The Governor produced by La Plante Productions. He is best known for his role on EastEnders<\/a>, where he cherished his time portraying Charlie Slater.<\/p>\n

“Derek was a devoted father, a generous member of the charitable Water Rats, avid golfer and all-around good man who will be greatly missed.” <\/p>\n

The actor played patriarch Charlie on-and-off from 2000 until 2011, with several guest appearances<\/a> in the subsequent years. He made his final appearance in 2016<\/a>, when the beloved cab driver suffered a fatal heart attack. <\/p>\n

Following the news of Martin’s death, EastEnders<\/a> shared a heartwarming tribute on its official Instagram<\/a> page, alongside a picture of the star on the Square.<\/p>\n

“We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Derek Martin. From the moment he arrived, Derek’s portrayal of Charlie Slater instantly cemented him in the hearts of the audience, as the head of one of EastEnders most iconic families,” read the caption.<\/p>\n

“Charlie would do anything for his family, and much like his character, Derek would do the same for those around him. Derek was deeply loved by all those that worked with him at EastEnders and will always be remembered with great fondness. Our love and thoughts are with his family and friends.”<\/p>\n

Fans of the soap were heartbroken by the news, and shared their own tributes to Martin in the comment section. <\/p>\n

“Oh no this is awful news. Sending love to his family, friends and the cast who worked with him,” wrote one, with another posting: “So heartbreaking another true icon gone may he rest in peace.”<\/p>\n

A third added: “Rest in peace Derek. Sending love to the family and cast of EastEnders. Uncle Charlie forever.”<\/p>\n
