{"id":510641,"date":"2026-01-12T10:43:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-12T10:43:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/510641\/"},"modified":"2026-01-12T10:43:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T10:43:11","slug":"more-than-230k-raised-in-a-day-for-hero-bondi-junction-police-officer-after-rare-cancer-diagnosis-australian-police-and-policing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/510641\/","title":{"rendered":"More than $230k raised in a day for hero Bondi Junction police officer after \u2018rare\u2019 cancer diagnosis | Australian police and policing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Amy Scott, the New South Wales police officer who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2024\/apr\/13\/police-officer-who-shot-bondi-junction-attacker-wielding-a-massive-knife-hailed-as-a-hero\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pursued and shot<\/a> the perpetrator of the Bondi Junction stabbing attack, has been diagnosed with an \u201caggressive form of breast cancer\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Joel Cauchi killed six people in a mass stabbing attack on 13 April 2024 at the Bondi Westfield shopping centre and wounded another 10.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Scott was the first officer to arrive, confronting Cauchi alone. She shot him twice after he approached her with a knife, before unsuccessfully attempting to revive him via CPR.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Scott received the Commissioner\u2019s Valour award later that year for \u201can act of conspicuous merit involving exceptional bravery\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">NSW Police Legacy announced on Monday that she had been \u201crecently been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cBeyond her dedicated service to the community, Amy is a devoted wife, a loving mother of two young boys, and has a family who depend on her and walk this journey beside her every day,\u201d the charity said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The chart launched a fundraiser on Monday morning \u201cto ease the financial burden for Amy and her family during this incredibly challenging time\u201d, saying \u201cAmy now needs the strength, compassion, and support of her community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">By Monday evening, the charity\u2019s fundraiser had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policelegacynsw.org.au\/fundraise\/inspector-amy-scott-appeal\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">already raised more than $230,000 <\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe have seen your bravery before. Hoping collectively we can add more to your bravery cup. You\u2019ve got this,\u201d one person wrote alongside their donation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The NSW police commissioner, Mal Lanyon, confirmed Scott had been fighting the disease \u201cfor some months now\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe want her to know that she is surrounded by the unwavering love and support of the entire NSW police force,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cDespite everything Amy is facing, she continues to show the remarkable person that she is by going out of her way to support her work mates, regularly coming into the station (at Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command) to offer comfort and assistance to those impacted by the recent Bondi terror attack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The NSW premier, Chris Minns, on Monday described Scott as \u201ca genuine, bona fide Australian hero\u201d who \u201cwe owe a huge debt of gratitude to\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>In addition to her actions at Bondi Junction, Scott has also been an \u201cinspiration\u201d to the officers who attended the Bondi beach terror attack on 14 December, Minns said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m devastated to hear this news. If anyone deserves a break it is Amy and we wish her the very best, she is an absolute champion,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>The NSW police minister, Yasmin Catley, said Scott was \u201cthe epitome of the brilliance of the NSW police force\u201d and \u201cthe whole police family are suffering at the moment with the knowledge of her diagnosis\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The opposition leader, Kellie Sloane, said Scott was \u201cfacing the fight of her life\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOur community is deeply grateful for Amy\u2019s service.
