That\u2019s all been well and good (and has been great for reminding us that something doesn\u2019t have to be new to look right), but it\u2019s also left us mired in nostalgia, obsessing over recreating past moments.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkay26d4000a3b6phhk36emh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When stars weren\u2019t repeating the past, they were wearing ridiculous outfits. Crazy colors, outrageous silhouettes, pointless ruffles and swags \u2013 the fashion victim became a venerated main character rather than a cherished sideshow act. Viral clothes, engineered to spin the internet into days of discourse, tainted our collective sense of what was glamorous and pretty.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkay26d4000b3b6pdeko73mx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Everyone has looked just fine lately, but at a time when Hollywood seems to be losing its hold on our fantasies and influencer celebrity has overtaken movie stardom, we have less of a sense of what modern-day glamour looks like. When we dream \u2013 of wedding dresses, proms, celebrations and fame \u2013 we see very little that shows us the visual values of our times.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/gettyimages-2255252125.jpg\" alt=\"Tessa Thompson pictured wearing \" be=\"\" good=\"\" and=\"\" out=\"\" badges=\"\" pinned=\"\" to=\"\" her=\"\" clutch.=\"\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"3000\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkay26d4000c3b6pyizqtgs1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At the Golden Globes, which is an early indicator of the fashion themes that will play out over the awards season, actors and designers (with the help of their increasingly powerful stylists) are speaking to the present. Like Renate Reinsve, of \u201cSentimental Value,\u201d wearing a Louis Vuitton gown of floor-length beaded fringes that moved. For years, red carpet dresses appeared to be stiff, oriented towards the still image \u2014 at last, a woman in motion! Another example was Tessa Thompson, who wore a warm chartreuse gown by Balenciaga, an elegant nod to her film, \u201cHedda,\u201d but with its slinky fishtail sequins, sleek and almost comfortable looking. And when is the last time an awards show gown looked comfortable, even though ease is what every woman wants?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkazmox200003b6p6faqu9q3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Political statements were not abundant this year, but Thompson was one of the stars seen wearing a \u201cBe Good\u201d badge pinned to her clutch, in reference to Renee Nicole Good, the Minnesota mother who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/11\/politics\/minneapolis-shooting-ice-watchers-protesters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shot and killed by ICE agents<\/a> last week.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/ap26011841053887.jpg\" alt=\"Ayo Edebiri's black Chanel gown was embellished with a brooch on each shoulder.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"3000\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkay26d4000d3b6pmb0ef7b7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ayo Edebiri, a star of the television show \u201cThe Bear\u201d as well as several films last year, wore a black velvet Chanel gown, kissed with brooches at the shoulders, that first appeared in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/03\/style\/chanel-metiers-art-show-new-york\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the brand\u2019s much-dissected show in the New York City subway<\/a> late last year. Black is an atypical sighting on the red carpet unless the gown is epic in proportion, which this was not. But the sleekness, the coy refusal to play the big and obvious dress game, propelled the look into a new definition of cool. (It\u2019s very Coco Chanel, who wore the most understated clothes and claimed anyone who didn\u2019t like it just wasn\u2019t sophisticated enough to get it.) This is a dress to please Edebiri first and foremost \u2013 a declaration of snarling chic when it seems everyone has something to say about everyone else\u2019s clothes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkay26d4000e3b6ptn4ca34w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Similarly in conversation with the past, instead of in its thrall, was Zoey Deutch, who played a winning Jean Seberg in Richard Linklater\u2019s \u201cNouvelle Vague.\u201d Her Prada plisse gown, with a drop waist cummerbund that fell into fringes of glass beads, was more the spirit of Art Deco \u2013 stately but uncompromising \u2013 then flapper costume from Spirit Halloween.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkay26d4000f3b6pdsz25bg2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Then there was Jennifer Lawrence in a naked dress \u2013 which, ugh, aren\u2019t we done with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/22\/style\/naked-dress-trend-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the naked dress<\/a>? But because Lawrence has spent the past several months wearing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/09\/style\/jennifer-lawrence-cool-girl-style\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sleek Tribeca mom looks<\/a> while promoting her film \u201cDie, My Love,\u201d she looked like she was having a blast in that exhibitionist Givenchy gown. This was mom\u2019s night out! \u201cI\u2019m naked!\u201d she told an Entertainment Tonight correspondent. The idea of women wearing whatever they want \u2013 and forget everyone else and their opinions on fashion propriety \u2013 is an extraordinarily contemporary one. Slightly more clothed was Emma Stone, glowing in a buttery satin top and beaded skirt by Louis Vuitton, and looking remarkably at ease in, of all things, a formal crop top.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/gettyimages-2255257734.jpg\" alt=\"Teyana Taylor, who won her first Golden Globe for \" one=\"\" battle=\"\" after=\"\" another=\"\" wore=\"\" a=\"\" custom=\"\" haute=\"\" couture=\"\" gown=\"\" by=\"\" schiaparelli.=\"\" class=\"image_expandable__dam-img image_expandable__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_expandable__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"3000\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/2026-01-11t235706z-1768953913-hp1em1b1uj3ax-rtrmadp-3-awards-golden-globes.jpg\" alt=\"The dress, which wrapped around her body, was accessorized with a silver rhinestone encrusted bijou thong.\" class=\"image_expandable__dam-img image_expandable__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_expandable__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"3000\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkay26d4000g3b6pzftzlryf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But no one compared to Teyana Taylor, a woman who made a true movie star turn in \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d and has dressed the part for months. (In fact, she\u2019s dressed the part for years, and often without a stylist.) The black satin fabric of her custom haute couture Schiaparelli gown wound around her body like a hypnotized serpent, and \u2013 Lord help us! \u2013 a silver rhinestone bijou thong rested in her derriere. To be that revealing without even touching the idea of vulgarity is powerful: Taylor shows us a genuinely new way for a woman to celebrate her own body.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkay26d4000h3b6pmeotu2ze@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Taylor\u2019s look was strange and compelling, balanced perfectly between the poles of \u201cgood taste\u201d and outrageous excess.
