He was ousted in another coup in 1979, which saw the return of the exiled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2009\/feb\/15\/ayatollah-khomeini-iran-revolution-islam-religion\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Ayatollah seized power after the Iranian revolution, abolishing the monarchy and establishing the Islamic Republic of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/iran\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Iran<\/a>. He installed himself as supreme leader, though the west viewed him as a theocratic dictator.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Revolution in Iran had been fermenting since the shah\u2019s ambition to make oil-rich Iran the fifth most powerful country in the world began to unravel in the mid-1970s, leading to cracks in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2015\/sep\/09\/iran-revolution-shah-pahlavi-peacock-throne-1978\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peacock throne.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A mass protest movement in 1977 gathered momentum thanks to Ayatollah Khomeini, who had spent years in exile, but helped to stir unrest through messages distributed on smuggled cassette tapes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">When Khomeini returned to Iran in 1979, he was greeted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2015\/sep\/09\/iran-revolution-shah-pahlavi-peacock-throne-1978\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">huge crowds in Tehran<\/a>. Later, once he had cemented his rule following a bloody coup, he entered the holy city of Qom, declaring Iran should be an Islamic, not a democratic republic. \u201cDo not use this word \u2018democratic\u2019. That is the western style. Soltani would be the first protester executed by authorities since the protest movement began.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">State media called for pro-government demonstrators to flood the streets in support of the regime on Monday, as it tried to minimise the impact of the protest movement. rel=\"noopener\">She was travelling with her family<\/a> from Iran\u2019s western province of Kurdistan to the capital, Tehran, to visit relatives when she was reportedly arrested for failing to meet the country\u2019s strict rules on women\u2019s dress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Witnesses reported that Amini <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rferl.org\/a\/iranian-woman-brain-dead-arrets-morality-police-hijab\/32035501.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was beaten in the police van<\/a>, an allegation the policy deny, and Amini\u2019s family and activists say she was killed by a blow to the head while in custody, a claim denied by Iranian officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Her death sparked months of anti-government protests that marked the biggest show of opposition to Iranian authorities in years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The protests after Amini\u2019s death shook Iran\u2019s Islamic authorities but subsided in the face of a crackdown in which rights groups said hundreds of people were killed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:?subject=Iran spokesperson, <strong>Esmaeil Baghaei<\/strong>, has said communication lines with the US remain open, as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/trump-administration\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump administration<\/a> continues to weigh the option of military strikes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis channel of communication between our foreign minister (Abbas Araghchi) and the special envoy of the president of the United States is open,\u201d Baghaei said, in Photograph: IRIB\/Reuters<a href=\"mailto:?subject=Iran crisis live: foreign minister says country ready for negotiations but also \u2018fully prepared for war\u2019&amp;body=https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/live\/2026\/jan\/12\/iran-protest-crackdown-us-donald-trump-latest-news-updates?CMP=share_btn_url&amp;page=with%3Ablock-6964b91c8f0816b5c3d0a0b2#block-6964b91c8f0816b5c3d0a0b2\" type=\"button\" class=\"dcr-1mulgdf\">Share<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Updated at\u00a004.10 EST<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The protests, which began in Tehran on 28 December, were triggered by the collapse of the Iranian currency \u2013 the rial &#8211; and soon morphed into nationwide anti-regime demonstrations with people also angry at social and political restrictions imposed by the government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">As my colleague William Christou <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jan\/08\/iran-plunged-into-internet-blackout-as-protests-over-economy-spread-nationwide\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">notes in this story<\/a>, the currency has continued to depreciate, while the government announced the end of a subsidised exchange rate for importers \u2013 a move that caused the price of groceries to soar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In September, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/sep\/28\/sweeping-un-sanctions-on-iran-come-into-effect-after-nuclear-talks-fail\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">widespread UN sanctions against Iran came back into effect<\/a> for the first time in a decade after being triggered by the UK, France and Germany (the \u2018E3\u2019) as Tehran failed to convince western powers it would address their concerns over its nuclear programme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">They were are a \u201csnapback\u201d of measures frozen in 2015 when Iran agreed to major restrictions on its nuclear programme under a deal negotiated by the former US president Barack Obama.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Iran was already under huge economic strain caused by US sanctions that cut the country off from global finance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">International sanctions have played a major role in worsening economic conditions for ordinary Iranians who are having to contend with high inflation, soaring prices and a huge devaluation of the rial.<\/p>\n<p>Iranians gather while blocking a street during a protest in Tehran on 9 January, 2026. He said Iranian authorities using \u201c<strong>disproportionate and brutal violence<\/strong>\u201d against protesters was \u201c<strong>a sign of weakness<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe condemn this violence in the strongest possible terms,\u201d he added. \u201cThis violence is not an expression of strength, but rather a sign of weakness. He did not say how long it would take for the internet to be restored.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Iran\u2019s internet shutdown has now lasted <strong>over 84 hours<\/strong>, according to internet tracking agency NetBlocks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The tracking agency said the blackout could be circumvented with shortwave radio, connecting to cell coverage at borders, Starlink and satellite phones.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:?subject=Iran crisis live: foreign minister says country ready for negotiations but also \u2018fully prepared for war\u2019&amp;body=https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/live\/2026\/jan\/12\/iran-protest-crackdown-us-donald-trump-latest-news-updates?CMP=share_btn_url&amp;page=with%3Ablock-6964a9508f087f91878dfe19#block-6964a9508f087f91878dfe19\" type=\"button\" class=\"dcr-1mulgdf\">Share<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Updated at\u00a004.18 EST<\/p>\n<p>Protests &#8216;under total control&#8217;, Iranian foreign minister claims<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Iranian foreign minister <strong>Abbas Araqchi<\/strong> has claimed the protests have now \u201c<strong>come under total control<\/strong>\u201d after the violence spiked over the weekend, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/liveblog\/2026\/1\/12\/iran-protests-live-us-rhetoric-rises-as-tehran-announces-3-days-mourning\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to comments being carried by Al Jazeera<\/a>, which we have not been able to verify the veracity of yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Araqchi was also quoted as having said the protests \u201c<strong>turned violent and bloody to give an excuse<\/strong>\u201d for the US president, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a>, to intervene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He went on to say the demonstrations \u2013 which spread to almost all provinces and dozens of cities \u2013 were \u201c<strong>stoked and fuelled<\/strong>\u201d by foreign elements and vowed that security forces will \u201chunt down\u201d those responsible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Because of the internet blackout it is difficult to get a clear picture of what is going on in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/iran\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Iran<\/a> as it is hard to obtain information from the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s foreign minister Abbas Araqchi claimed the nationwide protests in his country have now \u201ccome under total control\u201d. The group reported that more than 10,600 people were arrested by Iranian authorities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Another rights monitor, the Norway-based Iran Human Rights group, said on Sunday it had confirmed the killing of at least 192 protesters but that the actual death toll could already amount to several hundred or more. Activists say the shutdown is limiting the flow of information.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>President Masoud Pezeshkian accused the arch-foes of Iran of \u201ctrying to escalate this unrest\u201d<\/strong> and bringing \u201cterrorists from abroad into the country\u201d, in an interview broadcast Sunday with state media.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>Dozens of bodies have accumulated outside a morgue south of Tehran<\/strong>, according to footage on a video whose location was authenticated by the Agence France-Presse news agency on Sunday.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>State TV has aired images of burning buildings, including a mosque, as well as funeral processions for security personnel<\/strong>, with authorities confirming members of the security forces have been killed.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>Trump said on Saturday he would \u201crescue\u201d protesters if the Iranian government killed them<\/strong> and reiterated his threat to intervene, posting on his Truth Social platform: \u201cIran is looking at FREEDOM, perhaps like never before.
