Since the beginning of January, thousands of women and teenagers, including public figures, have reported<\/a> that their photos published on social media have been \u201cundressed\u201d and put in bikinis by Grok at the request of users.<\/p>\n

The deepfake tool has prompted investigations from\u00a0regulators<\/a>\u00a0across Europe, including in Brussels, Dublin, Paris and London.<\/p>\n

The European Commission\u00a0ordered<\/a>\u00a0X on Thursday to retain “all internal documents and data relating to Grok” \u2014 an escalation of the ongoing investigation into X’s content moderation policies \u2014 after calling the nonconsensual, sexually explicit deepfakes \u201cillegal,\u201d \u201cappalling\u201d and \u201cdisgusting.\u201d<\/p>\n

In response, X made its controversial AI image generation feature only available to users with paid subscriptions<\/a>. European Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier said<\/a> that limiting the tool’s use to paying subscribers did not mean an end to the EU’s investigation.<\/p>\n

The scandal has emerged as a fresh test of the EU\u2019s resolve to rein in Musk and U.S. Big Tech firms. Only a month earlier, Brussels fined X<\/a> \u20ac120 million for breaching the bloc\u2019s landmark platform law, the Digital Services Act (DSA)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The fine sparked a swift and forceful reaction from Washington, with the U.S. administration imposing a travel ban<\/a> on the EU\u2019s former digital commissioner and chief architect of the DSA, Thierry Breton.<\/p>\n
