The State of Illinois and Chicago City Hall sued the Trump administration in federal court Monday, accusing U.S. Border Patrol Cmdr. Gregory Bovino and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem of \u201can organized bombardment\u201d under the guise of immigration enforcement that\u2019s caused \u201cturmoil\u201d and created \u201ca climate of fear.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cUniformed, military-trained personnel, carrying semi-automatic firearms and military-grade weaponry, have rampaged for months through Chicago and surrounding areas, lawlessly stopping, interrogating, and arresting residents, and attacking them with chemical weapons,\u201d the lawsuit alleges.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe occupation of Illinois and Chicago is intended to coerce [Illinois and Chicago] to abandon their policies, which value and respect the state\u2019s immigrants, and devote their resources to further the immigration policies of the current administration,\u201d it says. \u201cIllinois and Chicago have refused to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n
But, it adds, \u201cthe U.S. Constitution stands as a bulwark against [the Trump administration\u2019s] onslaught against Illinois and Chicago.\u201d<\/p>\n
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n
The lawsuit is similar to, but appears to go further than, the lawsuit brought by media, protesters and clergy last fall to challenge the feds\u2019 tactics here. That lawsuit has been handled by U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis, who entered an order restricting the feds\u2019 use of force last fall. <\/p>\n
The plaintiffs in that case have sought to have it voluntarily dismissed in what appears to be a strategic move to avoid a skeptical appeals court panel.<\/p>\n
However, state lawyers filed a motion Monday seeking to have the new lawsuit assigned to Ellis, given that the litigation would be related.<\/p>\n
The legal escalation comes less than a week after immigration agent Jonathan Ross fatally shot a U.S. citizen, Renee Good, in Minneapolis, triggering a new wave of outrage across the country against the Trump administration\u2019s tactics.<\/p>\n
