Thousands of nurses are hitting the picket lines in what will be the largest nurses strike in the history of New York City<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) on Monday announced<\/a> that nearly 15,000 nurses at Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai Morningside and West, Montefiore, and NewYork-Presbyterian are going on strike after \u200b\u201cgreedy hospital management at these wealthy private hospitals have given frontline nurses no other\u00a0choice.\u201d<\/p>\n

The NYSNA posted a\u00a0long list of sticking points on contract negotiations, including \u200b\u201csafe staffing for our patients, protections from workplace violence, and healthcare<\/a> for frontline\u00a0nurses.\u201d<\/p>\n

NYSNA president Nancy Hagans said that any patients in need of care at these hospitals should enter them, emphasizing that \u200b\u201cgoing into the hospital to get the care you need is not crossing our strike line.\u201d She also encouraged patients to join the picket line with the nurses after receiving\u00a0care.<\/p>\n

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani<\/a> spoke out in solidarity<\/a> with the striking nurses, while also emphasizing the importance of \u200b\u201censuring New Yorkers have the care they need\u2026 especially during flu\u00a0season.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo New Yorker should have to fear losing access to healthcare,\u201d Mamdani wrote<\/a> in a\u00a0social media<\/a> post. \u200b\u201cAnd no nurse should be asked to accept less pay, fewer benefits, or less dignity for doing lifesaving work. Our nurses have kept this city alive through its hardest moments. Their value is not\u00a0negotiable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sen. Bernie Sanders<\/a> (I-Vt.) also expressed<\/a> support for the striking nurses, while denouncing \u200b\u201cNew York-Presbyterian, Montefiore, and Mount Sinai hospitals for being willing to spend millions on replacement nurses rather than bargain for a\u00a0fair contract.\u201d<\/p>\n

The NYSNA also got a\u00a0boost from 1199SEIU, which is the largest union of healthcare workers<\/a> in New\u00a0York.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt this time of unprecedented cuts to Medicaid<\/a> and other healthcare programs by Republican leaders in Washington<\/a>, DC, healthcare workers should not bear the brunt of funding shortfalls,\u201d said 1199SEIU president Yvonne Armstrong. \u200b\u201cMore than ever, we need stability in our healthcare system, which means investing in the type of good healthcare jobs which are fundamental to the wellbeing of caregivers and the communities they\u00a0serve.\u201d<\/p>\n
