There are two things about theatre that can truly draw in an audience: relatability or escape. Many people attend shows to forget daily life, but with Menopause The Musical, women \u201cof a certain age\u201d couldn\u2019t relate more. The female audience members at Alhambra Theatre & Dining\u2019s 2026 season opener have never felt more seen\u2014or more able to connect with the characters onstage.<\/p>\n

Directed by Tod Booth, this production marks the first time the show has been performed by a theatre company outside of the show\u2019s owners. Set across the various floors of Bloomingdale\u2019s department store, the story begins when a powerhouse cast of four women meet in the lingerie department. From the moment the audience caught sight of intimate apparel in varying sizes\u2014from barely-there to full coverage\u2014the laughter was nonstop.<\/p>\n
We follow Professional Woman (Millicent \u201cPenny\u201d Sylvester), Soap Star (Cathy Merkel-Roddy), Earth Mother (Lisa Valdini Booth), and Iowa Housewife (Dina Barone) as they bond over shared experiences with \u201cthe change.\u201d<\/p>\n
You\u2019ll most definitely recognize the music\u2014just not the lyrics. Parodied songs are set to popular hits from the \u201960s, \u201970s, and \u201980s, keeping audience members dancing in their seats.<\/p>\n
Lisa Valdini Booth, as Earth Mother\u2014the free-spirited vegan\u2014stole the show with her impeccable comedic timing and physicality. Her numbers \u201cHusband Sleeps at Night\u201d and \u201cPuff, My God I\u2019m Draggin\u2019\u201d had the audience roaring with laughter.<\/p>\n
During Cathy Merkel-Roddy\u2019s \u201cHot Flash,\u201d as Soap Star\u2014the glamorous, aging actress\u2014you could hear women throughout the audience calling out in agreement.<\/p>\n
Millicent \u201cPenny\u201d Sylvester, as Professional Woman\u2014the career-oriented powerhouse\u2014wooed the audience with her sultry voice and later transformed into another character during \u201cWhat\u2019s Love Got to Do With It,\u201d a true standout moment of the show.<\/p>\n
Dina Barone, as Iowa Housewife\u2014the devoted wife and mother\u2014brought the show to a comedic climax during \u201cOnly You.\u201d Frequently racing to the restroom and hoping to make it in time, her character had many audience members feeling the same way\u2014especially after all the laughter.<\/p>\n
The women come together during \u201cShoop\u2019s Medley,\u201d each performer shining individually while also delivering fantastic ensemble moments.<\/p>\n
Johnny Pettegrew\u2019s lighting design, paired with Alexia Adcock-Stanford\u2019s choreography, often made the audience feel like they were part of a high-energy disco.<\/p>\n
Menopause The Musical brings fun and whimsy to a serious topic. Whether you\u2019ve experienced \u201cthe change\u201d yourself\u2014or know someone who has or is currently going through it\u2014this show is a must-see. Bring your girlfriends, and even your husbands, for a night of nonstop laughter.<\/p>\n
