{"id":512552,"date":"2026-01-13T06:34:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-13T06:34:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/512552\/"},"modified":"2026-01-13T06:34:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-13T06:34:11","slug":"us-lawmakers-plan-denmark-visit-amid-trumps-greenland-threats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/512552\/","title":{"rendered":"US lawmakers plan Denmark visit amid Trump&#8217;s Greenland threats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 A bipartisan U.S. congressional delegation is headed to Copenhagen later this week in an attempt to show unity <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/denmark-us-trump-greenland-talks-1b783621cbbbc1218986151be9c6836c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">between the United States and Denmark<\/a> as U.S. President Donald Trump continues to threaten to seize <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nato-greenland-trump-denmark-threat-annex-4907c132b499531d8d5fe6cd549c0beb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greenland<\/a>, a semiautonomous territory of the NATO ally. <\/p>\n<p>Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., is leading the trip of at least nine members of Congress, including Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina. The group will be in Copenhagen on Friday and Saturday and will meet with high-level <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/greenland-us-trump-denmark-61eeb97b7199548e3aa13ef9f5c9d545\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Danish and Greenlandic government officials<\/a> and business leaders. <\/p>\n<p>In an interview with the Associated Press on Monday, Coons said the delegation wants to send a message that \u201cwe understand the value of the partnership we have long had with them, and in no way seek to interfere in their internal discussions about the status of Greenland.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Coons stressed that <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/denmark-greenland-trump-landry-special-envoy-7df618b975f25f7a606ec84f6d82bff9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the United States and Denmark<\/a> have long been allies, noting that the northern European nation came to the U.S.&#8217;s defense in the immediate aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks and have for years worked in tandem on other priorities. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs long as we have been constructive and respectful allies, the Danes have been open arms with us on security and investment and the region,\u201d Coons said, adding: \u201cI think the only thing that has changed is the recent statements by the president and the extent to which it seems to have gone from casual to serious, and I just think it\u2019s important for us to be heard as strongly supporting NATO and our alliance.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The delegation considered traveling to Greenland on the trip, but ultimately could not due to logistical issues, according to a person familiar with the trip planning who was granted anonymity to discuss earlier private discussions. <\/p>\n<p>Tensions have grown between Washington, Denmark and Greenland this month as Trump and his administration push the issue and the White House considers a range of options, including military force, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/greenland-us-options-takeover-trump-denmark-86790903847fc8ffc27334ccb64985a9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to acquire the vast Arctic island<\/a>. Trump reiterated his argument that the U.S. needs to \u201ctake Greenland,\u201d <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/greenland-denmark-security-trump-arctic-north-6066195d0c6b9e1bbe6da27d55b26ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">otherwise Russia or China would,<\/a> in comments aboard Air Force One on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nato-greenland-trump-russia-deterrence-threat-07d6c18ed968c25736eca2c25d935edb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">He said he\u2019d rather \u201cmake a deal\u201d<\/a> for the territory, \u201cbut one way or the other, we\u2019re going to have Greenland.\u201d Danish and Greenlandic envoys are expected in Washington this week for talks with Secretary of State Marco Rubio. <\/p>\n<p>China responded in kind on Monday, saying the United States should not use other countries as a \u201cpretext\u201d to pursue its interests in Greenland and said that China\u2019s activities in the Arctic comply with international law. <\/p>\n<p>Asked in Beijing about U.S. statements that it is necessary for Washington to take over Greenland to prevent China and Russia from taking control, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning replied that \u201cChina\u2019s activities in the Arctic are aimed at promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development in the region and are in accordance with international law.\u201d She didn\u2019t elaborate on those activities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rights and freedoms of all countries to conduct activities in the Arctic in accordance with the law should be fully respected,\u201d Mao said, without mentioning Greenland directly. \u201cThe U.S. should not pursue its own interests by using other countries as a pretext.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said that \u201cthe Arctic concerns the overall interests of the international community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Coons said in addition to reinforcing the U.S.\u2019s relationship with Denmark, he wants the trip to emphasize that \u201cthere is no imminent threat to Greenland from the Chinese and the Russians.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has warned that an American takeover of Greenland would mark <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/denmark-greenland-trump-2b12bb104faaaafda2ed270febfb0522\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the end of NATO<\/a>. On Friday, Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and the leaders of the four other parties in the territory\u2019s parliament issued a joint statement reiterating that Greenland\u2019s future must be decided by its people and emphasizing their \u201cwish that the United States\u2019 contempt for our country ends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greenland\u2019s leader also issued another statement on Monday, saying Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and part of NATO through the Realm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis means that our security and defense belong within NATO. This is a fundamental and firm line,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are a democratic society that makes our own decisions. And our actions are based on international law and the rule of law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>China in 2018 declared itself a \u201cnear-Arctic state\u201d in an effort to gain more influence in the region.
