{"id":512602,"date":"2026-01-13T07:00:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-13T07:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/512602\/"},"modified":"2026-01-13T07:00:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-13T07:00:11","slug":"on-strike-nearly-15000-nurses-in-new-york-city-walk-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/512602\/","title":{"rendered":"On strike: Nearly 15,000 nurses in New York City walk out"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"\">The nursing union had talks with the private nonprofit hospital systems over the weekend in hopes of reaching an agreement, but the negotiations were unsuccessful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The affected Mount Sinai, Montefiore, and NewYork-Presbyterian facilities remain open and are continuing to provide care, turning to staffing agencies for temporary nurses. The hospitals urged patients to maintain their appointments unless they hear about changes in plans from their providers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The health systems said they hoped to avert the walkout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In a statement, Mount Sinai said, \u201cNYSNA decided to move forward with its strike while refusing to move on from its extreme economic demands, which we cannot agree to, but we are ready with 1,400 qualified and specialized nurses \u2013 and prepared to continue to provide safe patient care for as long as this strike lasts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">NewYork-Presbyterian said in a news release that the system is focused on its patients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;This strike is designed to create disruption, but we have taken the necessary steps so our patients continue to receive the care they trust us to provide,\u201d NewYork-Presbyterian said. \u201cWe\u2019re ready to keep negotiating a fair and reasonable contract that reflects our respect for our nurses and the critical role they play, and also recognizes the challenging realities of today\u2019s healthcare environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">NewYork-Presbyterian said it had offered \u201csignificant wage increases\u201d to nurses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Joe Solmonese, senior vice president of strategic communications at Montefiore, criticized the union\u2019s \u201creckless demands\u201d for wage increases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe remain resolute in our commitment to providing safe and seamless care, regardless of how long the strike may last,\u201d Solmonese said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The nurses\u2019 union says the hospitals are also threatening to \u201cradically cut\u201d the health benefits of nurses. The hospitals say they provide robust health benefit packages for their nurses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani posted <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NYCMayor\/status\/2010790444482097192\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_self\">a statement on X<\/a> standing with the nurses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cTheir worth is not negotiable. Fair pay, safe conditions, dignity now. NYC stands with nurses and demands good faith bargaining for justice and care for all,\u201d Mamdani said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed an executive order over the weekend designed to help hospital systems maintain patient care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cMy top priority is protecting patients and ensuring they can access the care they need,\u201d Hochul said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\/news\/statement-governor-kathy-hochul-134\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_self\">statement<\/a>. \u201cAt the same time, we must reach an agreement that recognizes the essential work nurses do every day on the front lines of our healthcare system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The governor urged both sides to \u201creach an agreement as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In January 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chiefhealthcareexecutive.com\/view\/more-than-7-000-new-york-nurses-remain-on-strike\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">thousands of nurses in New York<\/a> went on strike before reaching an agreement on a contract.
