Community members in Los Angeles are on edge after\u00a0what appeared to be federal\u00a0immigration officers targeting street vendors Monday morning.<\/p>\n

A coalition of immigrants\u2019 rights groups rallied near Eagle Rock Plaza where they say they spotted federal immigration agents staging earlier in the day.<\/p>\n

Los Angeles City Councilmember Ysabel Jurado was among those speaking out against\u00a0the\u00a0alleged immigration enforcement operations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were driving down throughout our neighborhood, which is mostly people of color in a diverse\u00a0constituency, just taking people who looked like criminals because they were brown,\u201d she\u00a0said at the rally.<\/p>\n

Jose\u00a0Hernandez,\u00a0who has\u00a0operated\u00a0his longtime taco stand in Highland\u00a0Park,\u00a0said he was temporarily detained Monday morning and driven away.\u00a0He said that agents later released him, dropping him off about eight blocks from his place of business, when he was able to show proof that his immigration paperwork was being processed.<\/p>\n

In Spanish, he told KTLA\u2019s Carlos Saucedo that he plans to keep working.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut others are living in fear knowing that enforcement operations in Los Angeles are possibly being ramped,\u201d he said in Spanish.<\/p>\n

The coalition of advocates claim at least five street vendors were detained in the area, including a man with children who attend Los Angeles Unified School District schools.<\/p>\n

Witnesses said the father was taken from his taco shop at Figueroa Street and York Boulevard, a bustling Highland Park\u00a0neighborhood, around 1:30\u00a0p.m.<\/p>\n

    Jose Medina said he\u00a0witnessed\u00a0the arrest.<\/p>\n

    \u201cI\u00a0seen\u00a0him get thrown into the Suburban,\u201d he explained. \u201cThey took him.\u00a0So basically, they all\u00a0ran, they all scattered and he got caught.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Medina said that after the man was chased,\u00a0tackled\u00a0and detained, his taco shop was left unattended, prompting him to pack up the father\u2019s belongings for safekeeping.<\/p>\n

    \u201cI\u2019ve only seen it on TV, but then I\u00a0see\u00a0it live,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re\u00a0my people. It just went through my\u00a0blood\u00a0and I said, \u2018I just\u00a0have to\u00a0help them out.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

    Yet another street vendor only identified as Lidia said that when she came to work, the\u00a0father was already gone.<\/p>\n

    Like other undocumented workers in the area, she said\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0living in fear and realizes the sacrifices she\u00a0must\u00a0take\u00a0to\u00a0feed her children.<\/p>\n

    KTLA has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security, which houses the agencies responsible for immigration enforcement, for comment on the\u00a0apparent\u00a0operations.<\/p>\n
