Stephen Colbert<\/a>\u2018s Monday \u201cLate Show\u201d monologue featured a joke about oil company ExxonMobil that provoked loud groans from his studio audience.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Colbert first kicked things off by informing his viewers of the Trump administration\u2019s new criminal investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell<\/a>. \u201cNothing to worry about. Just a direct attack on our independent monetary system which props up the global economy,\u201d Colbert recapped, before making a quick phone call directing his accountant to \u201cliquidate all my holdings and move it into bronze weaponry and fertile goats.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cLate Show with Stephen Colbert\u201d<\/a> host noted that Trump\u2019s investigation into Powell has received fierce pushback, including in a letter published Monday warning of the negative consequences that pressuring the Federal Reserve could have on inflation and the basic functioning of the U.S. economy. \u201cThe letter was signed by every living former Fed chair,\u201d Colbert explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay, but what do they know about money?\u201d the \u201cLate Show\u201d host then joked. \u201cHave they ever correctly identified a giraffe on a cognitive test? Huh? Have they? Do we know? We don\u2019t know.\u201d <\/p>\n

Colbert additionally mocked Trump for sharing a Wikipedia screenshot over the weekend identifying himself as the \u201cActing President of Venezuela.\u201d The social media post prompted Colbert to joke, \u201cIn addition, Trump declared himself Miss Iowa in 1966. J.D. Power and Associates\u2019 Best Midsize Sedan in Initial Customer Satisfaction and the World\u2019s Largest Ball of Twine.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cLate Show\u201d host pivoted to Trump\u2019s recent White House meeting with America\u2019s biggest oil executives, which saw the president publicly state his interest in rebuilding Venezuela\u2019s oil infrastructure<\/a>. Exxon CEO Darren Woods responded by saying that Venezuela was \u201cuninvestable,\u201d which in turn prompted Trump to remark that he was going to keep Exxon out of Venezuela\u2019s oil industry because they were being \u201ctoo cute.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAh, yes, the notoriously cute global resource extraction corporation known as Exxon,\u201d Colbert remarked. \u201cYou know their slogan? \u2018When you think of us, technically you do think of baby ducks.\u2019\u201d In response to his studio audience\u2019s shocked laughs and groans, Colbert said, \u201cYeah, I agree. That\u2019s a tough one.\u201d<\/p>\n
