{"id":514036,"date":"2026-01-13T22:05:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-13T22:05:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/514036\/"},"modified":"2026-01-13T22:05:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-13T22:05:08","slug":"ena-widjojo-owner-and-longtime-celebrated-chef-at-hardena-in-south-philadelphia-has-died-at-73","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/514036\/","title":{"rendered":"Ena Widjojo, owner and longtime celebrated chef at Hardena in South Philadelphia, has died at 73"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Ena Widjojo, 73, of Philadelphia, owner and longtime celebrated chef at<b> <\/b>the Hardena restaurant in <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/south-philly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Philadelphia<\/a>, mentor, and mother, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, of cancer at her home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Born and reared in Java, Indonesia, Mrs. Widjojo came to the United States in 1969 when she was 17. She opened a cantina at the Indonesian Consulate in New York in 1977, worked as a caterer in the 1990s after the cantina closed in 1989, and moved to Philadelphia in 2000 to open <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/food\/restaurants\/hardena\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/food\/restaurants\/hardena\/\">Hardena<\/a> with her husband, Harry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Over the next decade and a half, until she retired in 2017, Mrs. Widjojo grew Hardena, described by the Daily News in 2007 as \u201ca postage-stamp-size luncheonette at Hicks and Moore Streets in a gritty section of South Philly,\u201d into a culinary and cultural connection for thousands of local Indonesians and other diners who enjoyed her homemade Southeast Asia cuisine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The corner restaurant\u2019s name is a blend of their names, Harry and Ena, and features Indonesian specialties such as<b> <\/b>golden tofu, goat curry, sat\u00e9 chicken, beef rendang, and tempeh. \u201cIt\u2019s the best Indonesian food in Philadelphia, a great mix of Indian and Chinese flavors,\u201d elementary schoolteacher Aaron MacLennan <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/philly\/entertainment\/20070816_A_taste_of_home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/philly\/entertainment\/20070816_A_taste_of_home.html\">told the Daily News in 2007<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In 2012, <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phillymag.com\/best-of-philly-archive\/hardena\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.phillymag.com\/best-of-philly-archive\/hardena\/\">Philadelphia Magazine named Hardena<\/a> one of its Best of Philly Indonesian restaurants, calling it a \u201cno-frills, high-flavor buffet.\u201d In February 2018, Mrs. Widjojo and two of her three daughters<a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/philly\/blogs\/the-insider\/female-chefs-from-philly-make-the-james-beard-long-list-20180215.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/philly\/blogs\/the-insider\/female-chefs-from-philly-make-the-james-beard-long-list-20180215.html\"> were named semifinalists<\/a> for the James Beard Foundation\u2019s <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/philly\/blogs\/the-insider\/hardena-indonesian-restaurant-got-national-recognition-20180328.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/philly\/blogs\/the-insider\/hardena-indonesian-restaurant-got-national-recognition-20180328.html\">best chef award for the Mid-Atlantic states<\/a>. In October 2018, Inquirer food critic Craig LaBan <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/food\/craig-laban\/indonesian-takeout-box-notpizza-south-philly-hardena-20200722.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/food\/craig-laban\/indonesian-takeout-box-notpizza-south-philly-hardena-20200722.html\">praised the restaurant\u2019s<\/a> \u201caromatic steam table of homestyle cooking that\u2019s been a well-priced anchor of Indonesian comfort for 18 years.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Friendly and ever present at the lunch and dinner rushes, Mrs. Widjojo was known as Mama to many of her customers and friends. She learned how to bake and cook from her mother, a culinary teacher in Java, and later incorporated many of her mother\u2019s recipes into her own memorable melting pot of Indian, Chinese, Arab, Portuguese, Spanish, English, and Dutch dishes at Hardena.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cShe served me greens once, and I felt like I was at home,\u201d <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DSq7VCQjqef\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DSq7VCQjqef\/\">a friend said<\/a> on Instagram. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cA growing number of locals have discovered, and become addicted to, Widjojo\u2019s zesty cooking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Freelance food critic Beth D&#8217;Addono in the Daily News in 2007 <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">She and her husband traveled weekly between Philadelphia and Queens while their daughters \u2014 Diana, Maylia, and Stephanie \u2014 finished school in New York. Maylia and Diana assumed control of Hardena when Mrs. Widjojo retired, and Diana opened the restaurant <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/food\/craig-laban\/inq2\/liwetan-platter-indonesian-cuisine-rice-and-sambal-diana-widjojo-20250714.html-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/food\/craig-laban\/inq2\/liwetan-platter-indonesian-cuisine-rice-and-sambal-diana-widjojo-20250714.html-2\">Rice &amp; Sambal<\/a> on <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/east-passyunk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">East Passyunk<\/a> Avenue in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Earlier, at the consulate in New York, Mrs. Widjojo made meals for former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and former Indonesian President Suharto and his large entourage. \u201cI cooked for all the diplomats.\u201d <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/philly\/blogs\/the-insider\/hardena-indonesian-restaurant-got-national-recognition-20180328.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/philly\/blogs\/the-insider\/hardena-indonesian-restaurant-got-national-recognition-20180328.html\">she told The Inquirer<\/a> in 2018.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">She grew chili peppers and lime trees in her South Philly backyard, was happy to share kitchen tips and cultural traditions with visitors and cooking classes, and helped her daughters <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/food\/michael-klein\/james-beard-media-awards-philadelphia-chefs-visitphilly-20190501.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/food\/michael-klein\/james-beard-media-awards-philadelphia-chefs-visitphilly-20190501.html\">cater the 2019 James Beard Foundation\u2019s annual Media Awards<\/a> in New York. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">She worked six days a week for years and <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/ediblephilly.ediblecommunities.com\/eat\/eat-hardena\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told edible Philly<\/a> in 2017 that her retirement was good for her daughters. \u201cIf I\u2019m cooking all the time,\u201d she said, \u201cthey\u2019re not learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \"><a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DSq7VCQjqef\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DSq7VCQjqef\/\">Ena Djuneidi Juniarsah<\/a> was born April 24, 1952. She baked cakes in a charcoal oven for her mother in Java and sold cookies and pastries after school when she was young. &#8220;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer memory will certainly live on in the dishes and recipes she created. A great loss for the Philadelphia culinary community.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Rutgers-Camden professor Sean Duffy on X<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Her mother was strict about cooking, Mrs. Widjojo said in 2018, and discarded any and all imperfect creations. \u201cLike me, with my kids\u2019 cooking,\u201d she said, \u201cif you\u2019re not good, that\u2019s no good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">She married fellow restaurateur Harry Widjojo in New York and spent time as a singer, beautician, florist, and nanny before cooking full-time. Away from the restaurant, she enjoyed drawing, painting, crocheting, and family strolls in the park. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">She could be goofy, <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/1577195309985542\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/1577195309985542\">her daughters said<\/a>. She sang \u201cYou Are My Sunshine\u201d when they were young and served as their lifelong mentor and teacher. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \"><a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DSq7VCQjqef\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DSq7VCQjqef\/\">Friends called her<\/a> \u201csweet,\u201d \u201camazing,\u201d \u201ca beautiful soul\u201d and \u201cwarm and welcoming\u201d on Instagram. She was a wonder woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In addition to her husband and daughters, Mrs. Widjojo is survived by two grandchildren, a sister, two brothers, and other relatives.
