Getty Images for Team Brady<\/p>\n<p>The number of Americans who have turned to drugs like Zepbound, Wegovy and Ozempic to slim down or control their blood sugar has <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/696599\/obesity-rate-declining.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than doubled<\/a> since early 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Since these drugs are prescribed to those who are obese or struggling with Type 2 diabetes, athletes backing or even using GLP-1 treatments is bewildering.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hormoneweightlossdoctorsnj.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Peter Balazs<\/a>, a hormone and weight loss specialist based in New Jersey, argues that there are several benefits to GOATs encouraging the use of the medications.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt opens the door to healthy discussions, allowing medical professionals to address risks, benefits and create a safer environment,\u201d Balazs told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThroughout their fame and hard-earned credibility, it encourages their followers to make the first step towards a healthier lifestyle,\u201d he added. \u201cIt can also redefine their legacy by transforming from sports icons to champions of public health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/secure.money.com\/pr\/te5e7e7699fb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\"><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.78086957;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-no-modal=\"true\" width=\"1024\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/tennis-great-serena-williams-poses-117982750.jpg\" alt=\"Serena Williams poses with an injection pen in a Ro ad campaign for GLP-1 weight-loss medicines.\" class=\"wp-image-38172833\"  \/><\/a>Retired tennis pro Serena Williams made waves when she announced her GLP-1 use with a Ro partnership. via REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>While 28-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/08\/03\/sports\/simone-biles-not-ruling-out-2028-olympics-as-she-dominates-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Simone Biles<\/a> doesn\u2019t take Mounjaro, the eight-time Olympic medalist partnered with Eli Lilly after her mother started the medication for Type 2 diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>Legends pairing with <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/28\/health\/next-level-ozempic-is-coming-inside-the-new-era-of-weight-loss-drugs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drugmakers and telehealth companies<\/a> also helps ease their transition from an athlete with a rigorous training schedule and nutritional planning to the very real possibility of weight gain, something Balazs calls a \u201csilent post-career crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPromoting GLP-1 agonists is more powerful when paired with the foundational principles they embodied as athletes, such as emphasizing adequate protein intake and resistance training to combat sarcopenia,\u201d Balazs said.<\/p>\n<p>Sarcopenia, the <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/38937282\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">loss of muscle mass<\/a>, is a real and unfortunate side effect of GLP-1s.<\/p>\n<p>Athletes can also destigmatize GLP-1 use after life-changing events that may bring on additional pounds, just as 44-year-old tennis pro <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/02\/sports\/serena-williams-preparing-for-tennis-comeback-three-years-after-retirement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Serena Williams<\/a> did when she teamed up with<a href=\"https:\/\/secure.money.com\/pr\/te5e7e7699fb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\"> telehealth platform Ro<\/a> (her husband, Alexis Ohanian, is an investor and board member).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCelebrity endorsements of GLP-1s can normalize the conversation and use of GLP-1s,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwell.edu\/find-care\/find-a-doctor\/dr-shiara-melissa-ortiz-pujols-md-mph-1376719617\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Shiara Ortiz-Pujols<\/a>, the director of obesity medicine at Northwell\u2019s Staten Island University Hospital, told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite the fact that Serena Williams is an elite athlete, she \u2014 like so many women \u2014 struggled with weight loss after giving birth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It also highlights the fact that even athletes can struggle to shed pounds, just like us mere mortals.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.66233766;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"38172831\" width=\"981\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/simone-biles-mother-nellie-biles-118836850.jpg\" alt=\"Simone Biles and her mother, Nellie Biles, in a Mounjaro commercial, where Nellie shares her experience with type 2 diabetes.\" class=\"wp-image-38172831\"  \/>Simone Biles and her mother, who uses Mounjaro, paired up with pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly in 2024. Lilly<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir openness can help break the stigma and give people permission to seek the treatment they need and to stop blaming themselves,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/ro.co\/weight-loss\/dr-rachel-goldman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Rachel Goldman<\/a>, a clinical psychologist and obesity psychology adviser with Ro, told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt allows one to shift the way they are thinking about health and weight struggles to a medical lens rather than a moral one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the support from sports heroes does come with a few caveats, Ortiz-Pujols warns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir job is to be top-performing athletes, which entails hours of training, optimal nutrition and adequate sleep,\u201d she said. \u201cMany people who take these medications have struggled their entire lives with weight and\u2026 these athletes rarely have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also the misconception of potential enhanced performance, a claim Ortiz-Pujols debunks with the reminder that these athletes \u201chave access to personal trainers and personal chefs with hours to train.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"That\u2019s some serious star power!
