{"id":514264,"date":"2026-01-14T00:19:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T00:19:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/514264\/"},"modified":"2026-01-14T00:19:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T00:19:13","slug":"combining-small-changes-in-diet-exercise-and-sleep-may-extend-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/514264\/","title":{"rendered":"Combining small changes in diet, exercise and sleep may extend life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcyp4se000x26nj50vs592i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Small changes in diet, exercise and sleep may extend life by a year when put into practice together, while making larger changes could provide more than nine additional years of life, according to a new study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczca5h000f3b6pv58fotwf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Combining changes in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/09\/01\/health\/mediterranean-diet-recipes-wellness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">diet<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/05\/health\/importance-of-exercise-sleep-wellness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sleep<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/14\/health\/mind-body-fitness-routine-wellness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exercise<\/a> also increased \u201chealth span,\u201d or the number of years a person may live without major health complaints.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczca5h000g3b6pn0yg0e5g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThese findings highlight the importance of considering lifestyle behaviors as a<strong> <\/strong>package rather than in isolation,\u201d said lead study author Nick Koemel, a research fellow in physical activity, lifestyle and population health at the University of Syndey\u2019s main campus in Camperdown, Australia.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczca5h000h3b6pugkdk3g6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBy targeting small improvements across multiple behaviors simultaneously, the required change for any single behavior is substantially reduced, which may help overcome common barriers to long-term behavior change,\u201d Koemel said in an email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczca5h000i3b6pr0xzkd3h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>READ MORE:<\/strong> <strong>Can\u2019t sleep? Take steps to <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/01\/01\/health\/five-sleep-tips-wellness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>improve your sleep hygiene<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>which boosts health.<\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczca5h000j3b6p0zxjbav2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, that finding is far from conclusive, said Kevin McConway, professor emeritus of applied statistics at the Open University in Milton Keynes, United Kingdom, who was not involved in the study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczca5h000k3b6psbqix2g6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cA snag is that the paper uses complicated statistical methods that are not always described clearly,\u201d McConway said in an email. \u201cIt\u2019s therefore difficult to tell to what extent the findings have emerged from the researchers\u2019 choice of statistical analyses, rather than things that are clearer from the data.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczca5h000l3b6pabhnjycf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Using scientific modeling, Koemel and his team found combining as little as five additional minutes of sleep, two minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity (such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/cnn-underscored\/health-fitness\/our-favorite-comfortable-running-shoes-releases-2025?utm_source=internal&amp;utm_medium=mainsite&amp;utm_id=features\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brisk walking<\/a> or taking the stairs), and an additional \u00bd cup of vegetables a day might lengthen life by a year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczca5h000m3b6patlvi617@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, this predicted outcome was only for people who had an extremely poor diet, slept less than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/04\/20\/health\/sleep-dementia-risk-study-wellness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">six hours per night<\/a> and only exercised about seven minutes a day. In addition, it wasn\u2019t until the model\u2019s lifestyle improvements greatly increased that the results became scientifically significant.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczca5h000n3b6p5pegjxt3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAll of the gains reported in this study are theoretical,\u201d Koemel said. \u201cWe cannot claim a direct causal effect from the lifestyle patterns. These findings should therefore be interpreted as expected or projected benefits under assumed behavioral variations, rather than confirmed effects of an intervention.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczca5h000o3b6py8rov2u9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The greatest gain in longevity \u2014 9.35 years \u2014 and health span<strong> <\/strong>\u2014 9.46 years \u2014 came with the combination of an addition of 42 to 103 minutes of exercise and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/cnn-underscored\/reviews\/ozlo-sleepbuds?utm_source=internal&amp;utm_medium=mainsite&amp;utm_id=features\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sleeping between seven and eight hours<\/a> a day, while also eating an extremely healthy diet that included fish, whole grains, vegetables and fruits.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczca5h000p3b6pnbewipx8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Adding exercise to the mix moved the longevity needle the most \u2014 a fact that did not surprise preventive cardiologist Dr. Andrew Freeman, director of cardiovascular prevention and wellness at National Jewish Health in Denver.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczca5h000q3b6pxmwmerk4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cExercise is the elixir of youth,\u201d said Freeman, who was not involved in the study. \u201cBut let me be clear \u2014 this study should not be interpreted as exercising for exactly two minutes and stop, you\u2019ve accomplished a goal.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczca5h000r3b6p9anpywby@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cRather, you should aim to get 20 to 30 minutes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/11\/health\/walking-fast-benefits-study-wellness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brisk, breathless physical activity<\/a>, combining strength and cardio in every day. Everyone in the study provided information on their diet \u2014 including ultraprocessed foods, such as sugar-sweetened beverages. A subset of the group also wore wrist watches that provided more objective measurements of movement and sleep.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczca5h000u3b6pvcbm2wfi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Researchers gathered this medical data and used it to form theoretical scenarios of improved longevity and health span, which was defined as the number of years free of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/29\/health\/heart-disease-risk-factors-wellness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cardiovascular disease<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/11\/29\/health\/exercise-midlife-dementia-risk-wellness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dementia<\/a>, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/25\/health\/mediterranean-diet-type-2-diabetes-wellness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">type 2 diabetes.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczca5h000v3b6pr17m0a5o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Enjoying a longer life and a longer health span, or remaining free of disease, aren\u2019t the same thing, Koemel said. \u201cCombined improvements in sleep, physical activity, and diet were associated with longer lifespans, even if people still developed some chronic conditions later in life.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/gettyimages-2234702079.jpg\" alt=\"The award-winning Mediterranean diet focuses on fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, olive oil, and little to no red or processed meat.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1067\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczca5h000w3b6posupz5cl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>READ MORE: Want to improve your diet? Instead of making drastic changes, you can ease into the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/09\/01\/health\/mediterranean-diet-recipes-wellness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Mediterranean diet<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczca5h000x3b6pa5wtzwgi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After adjusting the findings for many variables \u2014 such as the amount of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/08\/health\/aha-ultraprocessed-food-guidelines-wellness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ultraprocessed foods<\/a>, smoking, alcohol use, body mass index, insomnia, snoring and daytime sleepiness \u2014 the results differed depending on how much of each behavior change was accomplished.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczca5h000y3b6ptq6p7dxp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In addition to the lowest and highest levels of the lifestyle changes discussed above, researchers also found lower levels of exercise \u2014 less than 23 minutes a day \u2014 sleeping seven to eight hours a night, and an excellent diet were associated with nearly four more years of life and three years of health, the study found.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczca5h000z3b6poihfxmbh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Moderate levels of exercise (between 23 and 42 minutes a day), sleeping up to eight hours per night, and a high-quality diet were associated with a greater improvement of an additional seven years of life and just over six years of good health. So many calculations! What does it all mean?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczca5h00103b6py4mf86er@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis is not about the absolute minutes you exercise or sleep or the number of pieces of broccoli you eat.
