Bob Weir<\/a>, a founding member of the Grateful Dead, has died at the age of 78 from complications after a battle with cancer, his family said in a statement<\/a> Saturday.<\/p>\n

On Monday\u2019s \u201cThe Beat,\u201d<\/a> MS NOW\u2019s Ari Melber paid tribute to the musician and reflected on his career. Weir, alongside Grateful Dead\u2019s lead guitarist Jerry Garcia<\/a>, \u201cestablished something that went beyond music itself,\u201d Melber said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWeir\u2019s particular contribution included,\u201d he said, \u201cfusing a kind of revolutionary counterculture vibe, which we all recognize from so much of the music of that era, with his own take on classic Americana.\u201d<\/p>\n

After Garcia died in 1995 and the Grateful Dead officially disbanded, Melber explained how Weir helped lead the group \u201cthrough decades more tours, music and evolution,\u201d teaming up with former members to establish The Other Ones, The Dead and Dead & Company.<\/p>\n

Weir helped \u201clight the flame\u201d and \u201ckept carrying the torch for what became really part of the hippie movement\u2019s soundtrack,\u201d Melber said, adding that the success of those groups \u201cshowed that the hippie spirit is alive today, not merely for history lessons and throwbacks.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Melber said Weir\u2019s music wasn\u2019t about \u201cany particular, defined, written agenda,\u201d offering instead \u201cmore of a \u2018big tent\u2019 vibe,\u201d he noted that the legendary musician made a \u201ckind of exception in 2008\u201d when he, along with other former members of the Grateful Dead, performed at Barack Obama<\/a>\u2019s inaugural ball, which Melber called a \u201cspecial moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Melber also spoke about his personal connection to Weir. Melber said he first watched the musician perform with \u201cthe fully composed Grateful Dead\u201d in 1994, and last saw Weir play with Dead & Company this summer at the Sphere<\/a> in Las Vegas.\u00a0Weir also made an appearance on \u201cThe Beat.\u201d <\/p>\n

Melber noted that \u201cmillions of other fans have this experience\u201d and that \u201cbeing a Deadhead meant you could check in with this band any time: could be alone, going through one of the great old recordings you happen to like of a particular night, or you could go out and do a new five nights in a row.\u201d<\/p>\n
