{"id":514689,"date":"2026-01-14T04:29:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T04:29:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/514689\/"},"modified":"2026-01-14T04:29:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T04:29:12","slug":"construction-blocks-san-antonio-womans-accessible-exit-ksat-helps-secure-city-action-for-resolution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/514689\/","title":{"rendered":"Construction blocks San Antonio woman\u2019s accessible exit; KSAT helps secure city action for resolution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>SAN ANTONIO<\/strong> \u2013 Mary Lou Aguirre has called one North San Antonio street home for more than 40 years, but she said recent construction on Capitol Avenue made her feel trapped.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI\u2019ve been here since 1983,\u201d Aguirre said. \u201cThere\u2019s a big hole in the area that I used to get out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Aguirre uses a wheelchair because part of her leg was amputated two years ago. The front door to her house isn\u2019t accessible, so with the help of her care team, she typically uses a path through the backyard to leave her property.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">That was until a bond and street reconstruction project began on Capitol Avenue between West Hildebrand Avenue and Fredericksburg Road. Here\u2019s what we know from Public Works about this project:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 kDvXdO font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>It\u2019s divided into five construction phases<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>It was expected to last from March 2025 to September 2026<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>The project is currently in Phase 3 (West Summit Avenue to West Mulberry Avenue) and Phase 4 (West Mulberry Avenue to West Mistletoe Avenue)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">That\u2019s why the sidewalk and back driveway next to Aguirre\u2019s property had been torn up for weeks, making her once accessible exit inaccessible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThey tore up the sidewalk, and they just left it like that,\u201d Aguirre said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Aguirre said she tried to call the city, but never got help. That\u2019s when she reached out to KSAT. We met her on Monday and saw for ourselves the knee-high rock pile sitting outside her gate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI can\u2019t get out of here,\u201d Aguirre said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">KSAT emailed Public Works about her situation that same day. It only took a couple of hours for a solution to get started. We revisited Aguirre on Tuesday morning. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">She told KSAT that multiple people from Public Works had stopped by to give her a personal update on the project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">One man \u201cexplained to me that they were not finished,\u201d Aguirre said on Tuesday. \u201cThey had gone on, but they would be coming back, and it would be taken care of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">When KSAT revisited on Tuesday, the rock-and-debris pile had been removed, and it was obvious that city crews had tried to smooth out the sidewalk near her gate so it was accessible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIt is standard construction practice to apply the final layer of asphalt towards the final phase of the project, which will address the resident\u2019s concerns,\u201d a Public Works spokesperson told KSAT in an email.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Public Works told KSAT Aguirre\u2019s situation should be fully addressed in the next two weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cAre you feeling hopeful after seeing the progress?\u201d KSAT Reporter Avery Everett asked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cOh, I\u2019m feeling very hopeful,\u201d Aguirre said. \u201cIn fact, I feel like crying. Thank you. You guys have been great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Once the sidewalk is fixed, Aguirre said her next focus is to find a new accessible ramp.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Public Works said if someone has similar concerns about a current city project, they should refer to the original flyer alerting them to the construction. That signage should have project-specific contact information.
