{"id":515063,"date":"2026-01-14T08:21:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T08:21:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/515063\/"},"modified":"2026-01-14T08:21:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T08:21:10","slug":"californias-affordable-rent-act-will-not-be-moving-forward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/515063\/","title":{"rendered":"California&#8217;s &#8216;Affordable Rent Act&#8217; will not be moving forward"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A bill that would have put a harder cap on how much landlords can raise rents has just died in Sacramento.<\/p>\n<p>SAN DIEGO \u2014 Assembly Bill 1157, the Affordable Rent Act, also known as the &#8220;Rent Cap Bill,&#8221; will not be moving forward.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It failed to pass on Tuesday afternoon in the Assembly Judiciary Committee for the second year in a row.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Democratic Assemblymember Ash Kalra (D-San Jose), the author of the bill, introduced it last year and brought it back for reconsideration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>AB 1157 proposed establishing a permanent rent cap statewide, reducing it from the current 10% to 5%, and expanding protections to single-family homes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a cost to humanity.
