The presence of a \u201cdistraught\u201d man seen carrying a knife at La Jolla Cove led to a multi-hour standoff with police Jan. 11, with the man ultimately being taken to a hospital for evaluation.<\/p>\n
A \u201cdisturbance call involving a weapon\u201d was made to the San Diego Police Department\u2019s Northern Division around 2:30 p.m., according to Community Relations Officer Jessica Dishman. Officers responded and found the man holding a \u201clarge knife, like a butcher\u2019s knife,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe wasn\u2019t threatening anyone with it, but bystanders and the reporting party said he seemed distraught and was swinging it around\u201d and they felt threatened by his behavior, Dishman said. When officers arrived, the man went into one of the public restroom stalls with the knife and refused to come out, she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cBased on his behavior \u2026 we called the [the Primary Response Team within the SWAT unit] and our drone unit,\u201d Dishman said. \u201cThe drone unit was extremely helpful and kept eyes on him the entire time.\u201d<\/p>\n
The man did not say what he wanted or why he wouldn\u2019t come out. \u201cHe didn\u2019t say anything to anyone. He didn\u2019t talk to officers or anything. There wasn\u2019t a lot of back and forth,\u201d Dishman said.<\/p>\n
Police then used \u201cchemical agents,\u201d such as pepper spray, but the man still would not come out.<\/p>\n
Ultimately, officers Tased the man to get him into custody. According to Dishman, he told officers he \u201churts people for a living\u201d but didn\u2019t say anything else. He was taken to a local hospital for psychiatric evaluation and further care.<\/p>\n
