{"id":515604,"date":"2026-01-14T13:44:36","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T13:44:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/515604\/"},"modified":"2026-01-14T13:44:36","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T13:44:36","slug":"new-museum-expansion-in-nyc-opens-march-2026-with-free-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/515604\/","title":{"rendered":"New Museum Expansion in NYC Opens March 2026 With Free Weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mark your calendar: on March 21, 2026, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newmuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Museum<\/a> is throwing open the doors to its long-awaited new building\u2014and New Yorkers get first dibs with free admission all opening weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The 60,000-square-foot expansion, designed by OMA\u2019s Shohei Shigematsu and Rem Koolhaas in collaboration with Cooper Robertson, doubles the museum\u2019s gallery space and gives <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/newyork\/museums\/new-museum-of-contemporary-art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Bowery icon<\/a> a major glow-up. The new addition slips in right next to the existing SANAA-designed building, bringing a larger Sky Room, a new 74-seat forum for talks and screenings and a street-level entrance plaza that finally gives the museum some breathing room.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"24e4da33-0047-cab6-c0e9-8bb386ee9e45\" class=\"photo lazy inline\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"lazy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768398275_757_image.webp.webp\" alt=\"new museum rendering\" data-caption=\"\" data-credit=\"Rendering: Courtesy OMA\/bloomimages.de\" data-width-class=\"\" data-image-id=\"106362149\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\nRendering: Courtesy OMA\/bloomimages.de&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Inside, the reopening exhibition, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newmuseum.org\/exhibition\/new-humans-memories-of-the-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Humans: Memories of the Future<\/a>,&#8221; takes over the entire expanded building with work by more than 200 artists, writers, scientists and filmmakers, exploring how technology and social change keep reshaping what it means to be human. There\u2019s a mix of contemporary heavy-hitters like Hito Steyerl, Wangechi Mutu and Anicka Yi alongside 20th-century visionaries including Salvador Dal\u00ed, Hannah H\u00f6ch and H.R. Giger. There are also new site-specific commissions, like a fa\u00e7ade work by Tschabalala Self and a monumental sculpture by Kl\u00e1ra Hosnedlov\u00e1.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the reopening, the museum is debuting its first full-service restaurant, run by the Oberon Group and led by chef Julia Sherman, plus a doubled-in-size store packed with artist-made objects you can browse without even buying a ticket.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"53a418e9-44d3-416e-681f-d8da25dba590\" class=\"photo lazy inline\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"lazy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768398276_185_image.webp.webp\" alt=\"new museum restaurant rendering\" data-caption=\"\" data-credit=\"Rendering: Courtesy OMA\" data-width-class=\"\" data-image-id=\"106362150\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\nRendering: Courtesy OMA&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Opening weekend\u2014Saturday, March 21, and Sunday, March 22\u2014is completely free, but you will need to snag a ticket in advance. Registration for free opening weekend tickets goes live on the New Museum\u2019s website next month, but members get an extra perk: preview days before the public opening. (If you\u2019re feeling fancy, you can <a href=\"http:\/\/newmuseum.org\/support\/membership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sign up for a membership<\/a> now.)<\/p>\n<p>Regular tickets will then go on sale in February. Admission is $25 for adults, with discounts for students, seniors and people with disabilities, plus free entry for visitors under 18 and SNAP\/EBT recipients.
