{"id":515682,"date":"2026-01-14T14:35:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T14:35:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/515682\/"},"modified":"2026-01-14T14:35:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T14:35:12","slug":"china-had-a-record-1-2-trillion-trade-surplus-in-2025-despite-trumps-trade-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/515682\/","title":{"rendered":"China had a record $1.2 trillion trade surplus in 2025, despite Trump&#8217;s trade war"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HONG KONG (AP) \u2014 China\u2019s trade surplus surged to a record of almost $1.2 trillion in 2025, the government said Wednesday, as exports to other countries made up for slowing shipments to the U.S. under President Donald Trump\u2019s onslaught of higher tariffs. <\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/china\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">China\u2019s<\/a> exports rose 5.5% for the whole of last year to $3.77 trillion, customs data showed, as Chinese automakers and other manufacturers expanded into markets across the globe. Imports flatlined at $2.58 trillion. The 2024 trade surplus was over $992 billion.<\/p>\n<p>In December, China\u2019s exports climbed 6.6% from the year before in dollar terms, better than economists\u2019 estimates and higher than November\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-trade-tariffs-trump-exports-953ab5e9056cf7b21c00c54bec1d79dd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5.9% year-on-year increase<\/a>. Imports in December were up 5.7% year-on-year, compared to November\u2019s 1.9%.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s trade surplus surpassed the $1 trillion mark for the first time in November, when the trade surplus reached $1.08 trillion in the first 11 months of last year.<\/p>\n<p>Economists expect exports will continue to support China\u2019s economy this year, despite trade friction and geopolitical tensions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe continue to expect exports to act as a big growth driver in 2026,\u201d said Jacqueline Rong, chief China economist at BNP Paribas.<\/p>\n<p>While China\u2019s exports to the U.S. fell sharply after Trump returned to office and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-united-states-trump-xi-timeline-tariffs-adc2c2c00f13d8dcd4ecc92251b11533\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">escalated his trade war<\/a> with the world\u2019s second-largest economy, that decline has been largely offset by <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-trade-tariffs-trump-exports-75f570114f56c5b64209a039ab539ebb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shipments to other markets<\/a> in South America, Southeast Asia, Africa and Europe.<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"html-embed-module-a50000\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Stay up to date with the news and the best of AP by following our WhatsApp channel.<\/p>\n<p>        <a class=\"ap-btn-whatsapp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whatsapp.com\/channel\/0029Va7Tv2j59PwNEyqGCi1y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n            Follow on<br \/>\n            <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761588853_344_\" alt=\"WhatsApp\"\/><br \/>\n        <\/a><\/p>\n<p>For the whole of 2025, China\u2019s exports to the U.S. fell 20%. In contrast, exports to Africa surged 26%. Those to Southeast Asian countries jumped 13%; to the European Union 8%, and to Latin America, 7%.<\/p>\n<p>Strong global demand for computer chips and other devices and the materials needed to make them were among categories that supported China\u2019s exports, analysts said.<\/p>\n<p>Car exports also grew last year. Auto exports <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-auto-sales-ev-tariffs-871137ad17b9e491e14da0e6de1e1cc6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">surged 21%<\/a> in 2025 to more than 7 million units, driven by electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, an industry group, on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Mechanical and electrical items were the largest export category last year, rising 8.4% from a year earlier, customs data showed. China also exported more grain and fertilizer, while exports of furniture, clothing, shoes and other labor intensive products fell.<\/p>\n<p>Strong exports have helped keep China\u2019s economy growing at an annual rate close to its official target of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-congress-economy-defense-tariffs-d6192774e13ccb7e28e06d4c3f2173c4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">about 5%<\/a>. That has triggered alarm in countries that fear a flood of cheap imports is damaging local industries.<\/p>\n<p>China faces a \u201csevere and complex\u201d external trade environment in 2026, Wang Jun, vice minister of China\u2019s customs administration, told reporters in Beijing. But he said China\u2019s \u201cforeign trade fundamentals remain solid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven if exports sustain neutral or positive growth this year, more of China\u2019s growth drivers will need to come from domestic demand,\u201d wrote HSBC economists Erin Xin and Taylor Wang in a note on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The head of the International Monetary Fund last month <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/imf-china-economy-trade-tariffs-b6ef6674ea4b1c38b28fee89618188bc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called for China to fix its economic imbalances<\/a> and speed up its shift from reliance on exports by boosting domestic consumption and investment.<\/p>\n<p>A prolonged property downturn in China after the authorities cracked down on excessive borrowing, triggering defaults by many developers, is still weighing on consumer confidence and domestic demand.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s leaders have made <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-communist-economy-jinping-5year-2f614bd6bd80a1668a99ed01dcfb9158\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increasing spending by consumers<\/a> and businesses a focus of economic policy, but actions taken so far have had a limited impact. That included government trade-in subsidies over the past months that encouraged consumers to buy newer, more energy efficient items, such as home appliances and vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe expect domestic demand growth to stay tepid,\u201d said Rong of BNP Paribas. \u201cIn fact, the policy boost to domestic demand looks weaker than last year &#8212; in particular the fiscal subsidy program for consumer goods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the case of autos, domestic passenger car sales rose 6% in 2025, according to industry figures, but they fell back toward the end of the year as subsidies were <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-autos-byd-tesla-tradein-627253e9bc0302d081c2fb7463e22947\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scaled back or phased out<\/a> in some areas.<\/p>\n<p>Gary Ng, a senior economist at French investment bank Natixis, forecasts that China\u2019s exports will grow about 3% in 2026, less than the 5.5% growth in 2025.
