So why would anyone apply for a role, get through the interviews, land the post, but then\u2026 never turn up?<\/p>\n<p>The trend, known as &#8220;career catfishing&#8221;, is a curious new office shift that sheds light on how younger people feel about the treatment they go through during the recruitment process.<\/p>\n<p>Professional ghosting<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Catfishing, where someone pretends to be someone else online, is a &#8220;well-known&#8221; practice in the dating world, said <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/bryanrobinson\/2025\/02\/02\/career-catfishing-and-office-ghosting-gen-zs-no-show-work-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/bryanrobinson\/2025\/02\/02\/career-catfishing-and-office-ghosting-gen-zs-no-show-work-trends\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Forbes<\/a>, and one sometimes used by financial con artists, too.<\/p>\n<p>Subscribe to The Week<\/p>\n<p>Escape your echo chamber. And because &#8220;work itself&#8221; has &#8220;turned into a meme&#8221;, Gen Z &#8220;treats it that way&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The prominence of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/theweek.com\/business\/jobs\/why-gen-z-want-to-return-to-the-office\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/theweek.com\/business\/jobs\/why-gen-z-want-to-return-to-the-office\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gen Z<\/a> among career catfishing statistics may offer a &#8220;negative view&#8221; of younger jobseekers, making people think they &#8220;lack professionalism&#8221; and &#8220;dismiss conventional employment norms&#8221;, said RTE. But they also offer a &#8220;snapshot&#8221; of the &#8220;frustration&#8221; young people face in finding jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Long and dispiriting\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/theweek.com\/business\/employment\/957471\/is-the-uk-really-experiencing-a-great-resignation\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/theweek.com\/business\/employment\/957471\/is-the-uk-really-experiencing-a-great-resignation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Recruitment<\/a> has become a &#8220;labyrinthine, opaque and time-consuming&#8221; process, said <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/money\/2025\/feb\/19\/career-catfishing-why-gen-z-accept-job-offers-then-ghost-their-new-employers\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/money\/2025\/feb\/19\/career-catfishing-why-gen-z-accept-job-offers-then-ghost-their-new-employers\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Guardian<\/a>. In the course of a &#8220;long and dispiriting&#8221; recruitment format, applicants may have &#8220;got a better offer&#8221; or &#8220;simply changed their minds&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">They don&#8217;t feel they &#8220;owe prospective employers &#8220;anything&#8221; because they feel they&#8217;ve been &#8220;treated very badly by them&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The complexity of finding a job is partly because a significant number of positions being advertised don&#8217;t exist \u2013 they&#8217;re &#8220;ghost jobs&#8221;, or openings posted by companies, to make it appear they&#8217;re recruiting and &#8220;therefore growing&#8221;.
