Its last day of service at Union Square will be on Saturday, January 24.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph n2hx75i _1knl15h1 _1knl15h0 cej01i1\">The press release announcing the shutter notes that the team is preparing \u201cto step into a new chapter.\u201d It\u2019s unclear why the restaurant is closing and what those plans are. Eater has reached out for more information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph n2hx75i _1knl15h1 _1knl15h0 cej01i1\">Co-owners Nick Kim and Jimmy Lau (alums of Japanese restaurants <a href=\"https:\/\/ny.eater.com\/news\/406537\/masa-loses-a-michelin-star-nyc-sushi-midtown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Masa<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ny.eater.com\/2019\/8\/22\/20827317\/neta-closing-west-village-nyc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Neta<\/a>) <a href=\"https:\/\/ny.eater.com\/2014\/11\/25\/7281135\/sushi-bar-shuko-nick-kim-jimmy-lao-photos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opened<\/a> Shuko in 2013 at 47 East 12th Street, between University Place and Broadway. Since then, the restaurant has become known for the <a href=\"https:\/\/ny.eater.com\/2017\/6\/1\/15716254\/shuko-not-stuffy-omakase-ask-eater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">duo\u2019s approach<\/a> to unstuffy sushi with fun flourishes in a luxe tasting menu blending omakase and kaiseki, currently $270, served in an unpretentious space with cool vibes and hip music. Beyonc\u00e9 and Jay-Z have <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2015\/04\/01\/bey-and-jay-dine-on-japanese-food-and-more-star-snaps-of-the-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">been there<\/a>; the space starred in an episode of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eater.com\/2017\/5\/12\/15618666\/master-of-none-season-2-episode-5-the-dinner-party-recap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Master of None<\/a>. In 2025, Pete Wells <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/02\/18\/dining\/restaurant-review-shuko-in-the-east-village.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gave<\/a> Shuko a three-star review in the New York Times, blown away by an out-of-the-ordinary spicy tuna roll.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph n2hx75i _1knl15h1 _1knl15h0 cej01i1\">It\u2019s one of a handful of big restaurant closings lately, including sushi master Eiji Ichimura <a href=\"https:\/\/ny.eater.com\/2025\/3\/25\/24393125\/ichimura-tribeca-closing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">closing<\/a> his namesake Tribeca omakase.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Buzzy Manhattan omakase restaurant Shuko is closing this winter.
