{"id":516773,"date":"2026-01-15T01:18:17","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T01:18:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/516773\/"},"modified":"2026-01-15T01:18:17","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T01:18:17","slug":"chelsea-2-3-arsenal-jan-14-2026-game-analysis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/516773\/","title":{"rendered":"Chelsea 2-3 Arsenal (Jan 14, 2026) Game Analysis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Liam Rosenior&#8217;s first home game as <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"c43a00b9-2826-72b3-77a0-62730abc936e\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/team?id=363\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chelsea<\/a> manager ended in defeat as <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"feb44e87-58fa-9597-2691-b3c32768ebe4\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/team?id=359\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arsenal<\/a> edged a thrilling <a data-league-guid=\"7d7df547-a8c6-37a7-947d-7b661c801ff5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/league\/_\/name\/ENG.LEAGUE_CUP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carabao Cup<\/a> semifinal first leg 3-2 at Stamford Bridge.<\/p>\n<p>The visitors had looked well set for the Wembley final in March after goals from <a data-player-guid=\"db3d680c-98ac-691f-b52a-2da79478c7a8\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/241077\/ben-white\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ben White<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"ccc49e36-95e1-7186-22da-1b53b2a35bb5\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/258906\/viktor-gyokeres\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Viktor Gy\u00f6keres<\/a> put them into a two-goal lead early in the second half.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first serious test of Rosenior&#8217;s tenure and he responded with an inspired substitution, sending on <a data-player-guid=\"b196e000-27cb-3b5f-ac9b-6c3888e8d51d\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/325555\/alejandro-garnacho\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alejandro Garnacho<\/a> who quickly made it 2-1.<\/p>\n<p>After <a data-player-guid=\"632fe8fe-93cb-4d4b-a150-b5c1fdd1038f\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/287266\/martin-zubimendi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mart\u00edn Zubimendi<\/a> had scored a third for Mikel Arteta&#8217;s side, Garnacho pounced from a corner to set up an intriguing return match in three weeks time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Martin Zubimendi scored Arsenal's third goal in their first leg win over Chelsea.\" class=\"\" data-mptype=\"image\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\"\/>Martin Zubimendi scored Arsenal&#8217;s third goal in their first leg win over Chelsea.<\/p>\n<p>Nick Potts\/PA Images via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Arsenal led after seven minutes through their 24th set-piece goal of the season. <a data-player-guid=\"23bd493f-7c2f-347f-92d9-78ed75a80811\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/339075\/joao-pedro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jo\u00e3o Pedro<\/a> had been tasked with marking White but made little apparent attempt to challenge as Declan Rice&#8217;s corner arrived in the six-yard box. From there, the defender had the simplest task of nodding it over the line, with <a data-player-guid=\"0e0f3d6b-8e88-dc88-650c-b4592e9cc766\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/108662\/robert-sanchez\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert S\u00e1nchez<\/a> poorly positioned and helpless.<\/p>\n<p><a data-player-guid=\"75eafe6b-51d5-f593-082b-6a4f1d789d52\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/169532\/kepa-arrizabalaga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kepa Arrizabalaga<\/a> needed strong wrists to beat away <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/376481\/estevao\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Est\u00eav\u00e3o<\/a>&#8216;s bullet drive after cutting in from the flank, Chelsea&#8217;s first serious attempt on goal just after the half-hour mark. The Brazilian was the Blues&#8217; liveliest player in the first half and appeared their likeliest route to a way back.<\/p>\n<p>It was Arsenal though that came closest to doubling their lead before the break. Chelsea&#8217;s defence stood off and gave <a data-player-guid=\"6e89011f-e235-9821-0a37-2e3842e77a4e\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/277385\/william-saliba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William Saliba<\/a> far too much time on the ball and he responded with a wonderfully-struck curler onto the roof of the goal.<\/p>\n<p>Chelsea had competed well against the <a data-league-guid=\"6949f3af-300c-35f1-beab-b95669eedd38\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/league\/_\/name\/ENG.1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Premier League<\/a> leaders and could count themselves unfortunate to be behind but the game turned on a horrendous goalkeeping error shortly after half-time.<\/p>\n<p><a data-player-guid=\"8bc110d8-2e41-2af9-c56e-0763870ac2f5\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/280555\/bukayo-saka\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bukayo Saka<\/a> slipped in the overlapping White down the right. His low cross ought to have been a simple take for S\u00e1nchez, but the keeper allowed the ball to squirm through his palms and into the path of Gy\u00f6keres, who shovelled it gratefully over the line.<\/p>\n<p>Rosenior responded by sending on Garnacho for the willing but largely ineffective <a data-player-guid=\"5645bf26-3904-382a-a17b-61fb8b0a2d21\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/363038\/marc-guiu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marc Guiu<\/a>. Within two minutes he had halved the deficit. <a data-player-guid=\"02aa5087-e2ac-7557-f098-7d2db41656e2\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/256115\/pedro-neto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pedro Neto<\/a> crossed from the right and, as White and <a data-player-guid=\"b6765ac7-63b2-227c-12e8-f6342bf9405c\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/285450\/enzo-fernandez\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Enzo Fern\u00e1ndez<\/a> both leapt and missed it, there at the far post was Garnacho to take a touch and whack it through the legs of Arrizabalaga.<\/p>\n<p>Chelsea could not capitalise on their brief momentum and Arsenal quickly gave them a taste of what they have missed for much of the season &#8212; a moment of creative penetration.<\/p>\n<p>Gy\u00f6keres, buoyed by a rare goal from open play, might have gone for goal himself but instead squared it to Zubimendi, who fooled <a data-player-guid=\"acb84374-10ed-880e-ccf6-4c7a102d103a\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/270190\/wesley-fofana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wesley Fofana<\/a> with a mischievous feint to make space before lashing Arsenal&#8217;s third into the corner.<\/p>\n<p>A sprawling save from S\u00e1nchez kept <a data-player-guid=\"2ddb2d9a-11b1-28cd-ecb8-691cb8f9faa1\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/209581\/mikel-merino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mikel Merino<\/a> from making it four.<\/p>\n<p>Arsenal could have used it because soon Garnacho had halved the arrears again.
