{"id":516950,"date":"2026-01-15T03:07:15","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T03:07:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/516950\/"},"modified":"2026-01-15T03:07:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T03:07:15","slug":"how-iranian-bank-collapse-fueled-economic-unrest-protests-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/516950\/","title":{"rendered":"How Iranian bank collapse fueled economic unrest, protests: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An Iranian bank collapse late last year fueled the economic crisis that drove thousands to protest across dozens of cities over the past two weeks \u2014 threatening the Islamic Republic\u2019s control.<\/p>\n<p>Ayandeh Bank \u2014 which was run by regime cronies \u2014 went belly up with nearly $5 billion in losses on a pile of bad loans, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/middle-east\/bank-collapse-iran-protests-83f6b681?mod=hp_lead_pos7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\">Wall Street Journal report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It had offered the highest interest rates of any bank in Iran and drew in millions of depositors \u2014 but it relied heavily on the government to print batches of inflationary money, the report said.<\/p>\n<p>Iranian workers cover the sign of Ayandeh Bank \u2014 which was run by regime cronies and went belly up with nearly $5 billion in losses. Morteza Nikoubazl\/NurPhoto \/ Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>Ayandeh also practiced self-lending, often lending money to many of the bank founder\u2019s own companies, according to the report.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The bank was \u201ca Ponzi scheme,\u201d the director of bank supervision at the Iranian central bank said last year.<\/p>\n<p>Its largest investment was the Iran Mall, a structure twice the size of the Pentagon that opened in 2018 with an IMAX movie theater, library, swimming pools, indoor gardens, a car showroom and a hall of mirrors made to look like a 16th-century imperial Persian palace.<\/p>\n<p>The opulent, city-size mall opened its doors as the nation\u2019s currency, the rial, spiraled, wages fell, food prices skyrocketed and a water and energy crisis grew so severe that President Masoud Pezeshkian proposed moving the capital from Tehran closer to the Indian Ocean coast.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s yet another example of the kinds of stories of corruption or unfair practices that give a lot of ordinary Iranians the impression that the system has been rigged against them, or at least rigged in the favor of a small number of elite,\u201d Esfandyar Batmanghelidj, CEO of the Bourse &amp; Bazaar Foundation, an economic think tank, told the Journal.<\/p>\n<p>The Iranian government folded the bank into its largest state-owned lender, Bank Melli, and rushed to print loads of money to try to cover it up \u2014 but it was too late. At least five other Iranian banks are nearing collapse, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s currency spiraled, wages fell, food prices skyrocketed and a water and energy crisis grew severe. AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The bank crisis hit at the same time as a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/22\/world-news\/iran-tests-ballistic-missiles-six-months-after-12-day-war-with-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">12-day war with Israel and the US in June<\/a>. In November, Israel and the US threatened to strike again if Iran tried to start up its nuclear or missile programs \u2014 further weakening the nation\u2019s image.<\/p>\n<p>American and European sanctions directed some oil revenue away from Iran and the US clamped down on money laundering from Iraq.<\/p>\n<p>The value of the rial plummeted so fast that shop owners couldn\u2019t set prices on their goods in time and importers lost money before they even listed their items for sale.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of merchants \u2014 who rarely join in protests \u2014 took to the streets of Tehran as the economic crisis worsened.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of people have demonstrated in dozens of cities across Iran despite an internet blackout and a government crackdown, as more than 2,500 have been killed during protests, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/iran-protests-2500-killed-activists-trump-us-act\/story?id=129194150\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-nyp-affiliate=\"true\">estimate from the Human Rights Activists News Agency<\/a> on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>People gather during a protest on January 8, 2026, in Tehran, Iran.
